I think this year is shaping up to be more like 2009, crazy talented performers, but the shows...

It's still early, so there is time, but I don't know if some of these shows have what they need to peak at Finals week rather than midseason.

It's June.

yep. Quick...how many of those endings out there will be the same one in August?

few if any.

Shows get tweaked so much along the way and add in new delights...trust me, it's too soon to tell

This is based strictly on watching the few shows on Fan Network, the theater and various unnamed sites, so I still reserve the right to change my mind when I see them in Minnesota, but so far, 2012 is disappointing.

Let us go corps by corps of who I have seen

Cadets - You knew 2012 was going to be a let down, when a corps has a year like they did, rarely is it matched the next year. (See Cadets 1987, Star 1991, Cavaliers 1995) However, the show is IMO entertaining, but I was hoping they would have approached it from a Mannheim Steamroller aspect. I think this show will please the fans, but the judges will have no choice but to place it in the 3-4 placement.

BD - When I heard the pre-season recording, I thought WOW, when I watched a few videos, I was left saying, okay, this is missing something. I think it will win, but like 2008, not a show I visit upon regularity. Need to change the ending and have the "Sing Sing" style number be a bit more in your face.

Phantom- Better than I thought, but the closer like last year at this point needs to be expanded on, if they could add another :30, I think they could be a player in the top 3.

Crown - I appreciate that they are taking the Star approach at a "win at all cost mode", very demanding show, but it loses me here and there and wishing for Rach Star Part Dos. I am hoping this show grows on me, it has not showcased very well on video for me as of yet.

Cavaliers - Well,..... yeah, I need to see this one live. Question might be, is this worse than 1997... that may be the only question left for this season.

Bluecoats - I thought last year was the best BC show that I may have ever seen, I was not there in 2008. The show like many have said, loses steam in the 2nd half, so far I agree. We will see.

SCV - I am very disappointed in them this year, I really was hoping they would step up and be a top 3 corp. Yes the drumline is out of this world, but the show is borderline snooze fest. Memo to Jeff Fiedler, pull out the 1995 Cavaliers chart and feel free to use it. Hopefully, there will be more changes to come.

To date, those are the only shows I have seen, and I hope I am wrong, I really do. The worst DCI season I have seen and I have been going or performing since 1988 (I missed 2008), was 2001. Of the 6 that are listed above, maybe 2 are better than 2011. BD and maybe Crown. That is not good and I have not even seen 7-17 yet.

Thoughts on 2012 VS 2011 or as a great stand alone season?

Before you speak, think: Is it true? Is it necessary? Is it kind?

Was it just me, or was anyone else bored to tears in the middle section of Crown's show? Liked the opener, but that was about it...

When did you last see Crown perform? I thought the middle section was a little slow and disjointed based on what I saw in the Louisville VODs, but I haven't seen it since. In any case, to me, Fanfare through the closer more than made up for a few minutes of less-than-polished transition/percussion feature for me.

However, I think so long as Crown has the opener and closer pretty solid, they have a good chance of ending up with a great how. Their 2009 show went from "eh, some good parts" to OMG BEST CROWN SHOW EVAR over the course of like two weeks relatively late in the season for me, so given the solid opener and closer, I have truly high hopes for the end-quality of this year's Crown show.

I disagree, but I'm not saying you're wrong, as you did nail a couple things.

Cadets: I feel like they're even stronger than last year, with just a different show concept. I think DCP is putting WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYYY too much emphasis on show concepts and overlooking how good these kids (all of DCI) are this year. Just relax and enjoy CHRISTMAS!

BD: Man, these kids can play. As for the show concept, it is a little strange. BD isn't really one to change their show around too much, so don't get your hopes up on big changes happening (unless they're not in first after a regional or two).

Phantom: Again, a very talented group of kids. I don't know if it NEEDS to be longer, or I just wish they kept playing for another hour.

Crown: Huge letdown for me. I did not like Rach Starr at all (few people I know actually do). I'm actually watching it now and I wish they just took what they had and just tweaked a couple things with a different show for this year. Instead, they've written something way too hard for the talent level. Their drumline was barely hanging on last year (for the Top 5) and this year they bring in a Thom Hannum book. Yikes! They have VERY weak marching technique (unless skipping is what you're supposed to do when marching backwards and jazz running) and this year they wrote a ton of direction changes at fast tempi. Saw a couple people fall in Orlando and there's just general disarray when they try to march while playing. The used to have a good guard, but Orlando was the worst showing I'd ever seen. I am not exaggerating when I say that THERE WAS A DROP ON EVERY SINGLE TOSS. Of course, they have a strong hornline, but that isn't enough to break 90. And this focus on the more difficult things causes the easy stuff to be glossed over. For example, the group that plays bass drums and timpani play a couple notes in the beginning of the show and then....wander aimlessly. Meanwhile, the rest of the corps is RIGHT IN FRONT OF THEM, so your eye gets drawn away from the show right to people who don't look like they're in the show.

Cavaliers: A very strong corps, with just a strange concept. If they make a few tweaks, making the show more smooth, they'll be right back in the hunt.

Bluecoats: I love this show. A couple innovative things going on and every section seems strong. I can't wait to see this live.

SCV: Let them try different arrangements. I love SCV's style of doing their own thing and doing it well.
