gak27
... No, it isn't. On the other hand, we haven't had a corps from DCI's top pay bracket die since 1974. Do you realize how amazing that track record is? Look at how top corps fared pre-DCI....look at top winter guards, or other comparable activities....it is astonishing. Clearly, DCI has been doing something that is working for corps at that level. ... Just curious -- what do you consider DCI's top pay bracket? Top 12? Top 5? At a minimum, 2-7 fits this criterion... You mean 27th Lancers? Pay brackets have changed over time. For example, in the 1980s, the top 8 got higher appearance fees than the 9th-16th place corps, who in turn were paid more than lower ranking corps. By the time 27th Lancers folded, they had placed out of the top 8 four straight years, and thus spent three seasons outside of that top pay bracket. That's why I asked -- apparently it was meant "died when they were in the top bracket"? Rather narrow view, IMO, but I'm not here to pick nits...too hard to see w/o bifocals :lookaround:/> Edited November 29, 2012 by gak27
cixelsyd
That is how I read it. As such, I was not aware any corps ever folded while at the top of the DCI pay scale. The only possibility is Purple Lancers.
corpsband
except the rest of the proposal not implemented yet...ya know, bagging open Class, firing Dan, the rest except the dci board can pass or reject any of these measures it so choses. skywhopper
People really seem to be missing the fact that the whole MM thing is simply a fiscal experiment on the part of a handful of kid's marching bands. It is not a new circuit, not much is radically different. It is just a group of shows following same basic principles, just different producer and revenue streams. These same corps are participating in other shows in the tour, under normal financial distribution structures. By making a third to a quarter of their shows part of this "fiscal experiment" the G7 are starving other show sponsors (many of whom include other corps and DCI) of the ticket revenue that would be earned if these corps had appeared in a wider variety of settings. And they're starving the other corps of the additional audience they would draw. Fair enough if the G7 were not part of DCI, but as members of DCI they have an implicit responsibility to work not only for themselves but for the activity as a whole.

Close, but they also were out of the top 7 for three years running: 1987-9th; 1988-10th; 1989-9th.

Well a number of the TOC shows were already being sponsored by a corps (including at least PR , CC & Cadets ) so they're not starving show sponsors.
