Crossmen 2013

Recommended Posts

I knew someone would say that! But are Crossmen trying to represent protest as managed by organizations? Also, if I do an image search for "protest sign", homemade signs are what appear most frequently.

But would homemade signs be the most effective choice for the drum corps representation? In other words, will fans (or GE judges) be more likely to grasp all this background knowledge on first viewing, as you have, or will they simply think the corps skimped on prop workmanship?

Sometimes, visual effect is better achieved by taking some latitude with physical/historical accuracy. For instance, the poker chips Spirit of Atlanta used last year would not have been as effective if accurately sized.

I don't know about you but I either go big or go home. That includes my choice of casinos. Any casino I bother going to has chips at least as big as me.

On a more serious note, I'm excited to finally watch this show tomorrow in full and see what the fuss is about. Interested also in seeing whether this discussion may actually be having an effect on GEV numbers, judging from the disconnect between GEV and VA numbers last night in Evansville.

A good number of protests are managed by organizations. It's most efficient to print up a bunch of signs than to rely on people doing it themselves.

Just my opinion: I believe it's less about what the signs "look like" and more about the fact (or in this case my opinion) that they look like they're being carried by kids doing a drum corps show.

I know that's sort of a "duh" statement, but it's the challenge of these "statement" shows.

If you're going to set a stage (however you dress it) you have to make sure the players understand the motivation, skills, historical looks, everything it takes to pull it off.

If the kids nail it, the signs will work (but that's just me).

This was never going to be easy, and it wasn't a safe choice. I'm glad they chose difficult - I hope they nail it.

To be sure! But they would have been better had they not just been white (with black trim).

So it sounds like the guard isn't dressed as hippie activists with dreadlocks and bandanas over their noses? I was looking forward to seeing the brass take up riot shields and batons and tear-gas the guard during the drum feature! :w00t:

That's sort of what happened during last year's Genesis show. (Instead of protesters, the guard were revolutionaries against a repressive government in a dystopian future. And they were crushed.)
