  1. 1. from a percussionists perspective which is more praiseworthy than the other

    • DCI World Class first place corps
    • Fred Sanford trophy for best World Class percussion section

Percussion sections the caliber of the 2013 Cadets only come along every once in a while. 2013 Cadets percussion set the bar pretty freaking high! :worthy:

Indeed. There is a champion every year, but a line as great as 2013 Cadets is rare. I would much rather have been a member of their drumline than Crown's.

My personal order of priority:

1) Win both DCI Ring and Sanford Trophy.

2) Win DCI but not Sanford.

3) Win Sanford but not DCI.

4) Win neither.

My perspective from someone who had a chance at choice #1...

In semis in 1988 the Madison Scouts had the highest score, won drums, and other stuff, but we didn't know it because of the draw for scores.

On Saturday we knew the caption scores as they were announced, and that we were in 1st place overall, and we were ecstatic.

Later we found out that on Friday we had the highest score in several categories won by other corps on Saturday, and thought "wow, it would have been cool to win guard and drums and ..."

Nothing was as cool as being called champions as a corps.

Would I trade a Sanford trophy for the DCI championship?

Nope.

I have to think about this a bit more before I vote.

My observations of percussionists is that they form a special bond in their drumlines which makes the Sanford a bit more personal than in the larger corps. Since WGI has highlighted both percussion and color guard but not brass, I am wondering if the way caption awards and winning rings are looked at is different today than BITD. (Just thinking out loud here.)

But today's drumlines do much more than park on the 50 and drag out a few rolls. So the DCI ring is also an acknowledgement of their visual skills within the whole drill and not just the musicianship within the whole ensemble. Those who mock Crown's 6th place drum finish in light of their first place ring never mention how much moving about those Crown percussionists did on the whole field and sidelines with several staging areas for various percussion instruments.

I also wonder which of these two I would stress on my resume if I were applying for a teaching gig which included being a percussion specialist in addition to other duties. I know that 99.9 per cent of getting jobs today is who you know, but I am wondering aloud which would be more impressive to those unknown strangers who also have to sign-off on the contract before I get the job. Everything everyone has said about being the best in my skill and being a team player I agree with. But what would personally give me more pride I am not yet sure.

Is there really nothing more to drums than what the individual caption measures? I thought they were part of the music captions as well.

Unfortunately, there isn't a caption award for overall music. The drums would definitely influence that, as in this past year where although Crown posted perfect brass, the drum score caused the Cadets to have the highest overall music over the three nights.

I feel like drums can play some effect into visual and GE, but listening to tapes in the past, definitely not as weighted as the brass and guard, in music and visual GE respectively.
