BRASSO
, why would I expect DCI to program exactly like alumni corps?! You shouldn't have to even contemplate such a thing, as this thread is already 34 pages too long, imo, as its pretty much been established by one and all on page 1 of this thread that a Corps has no chance of competing successfully in DCI with a show the OP has inquired about. Why contemplate if Ted Williams today could hit a C.C. Sabathia fastball/ curveball/ slider when we all know that the Splendid Splinter is not going to ever get his chance for us to ever know ? Some things are just not going to happen.. and this OP question posed on this thread is one of them .End of story. N.E. Brigand
[Avon Lake] is not as nice of a stadium as Michigan City's Ames Field. There is history associated with Michigan City, which I'm guessing is why the corps directors voted to put and keep Finals week there. Fair enough. In which case, they ought to be working harder to get the attendance up to Avon Lake's levels. History doesn't pay the bills.
Jeff Ream
IIRC $10 for individuals and $500 for Minis... I&E groups I can't remember - for the record.... As for few HS bands competing in the early 70s.If you thought some band directors were anti-DC then. Just bring up the added headache of competing and dealing with the parents.... s/ guy who graduated HS in 1975... and the judges aren't getting a lot that night. it's usually $50, maybe a drink or 3 and a room you share
Jeff Ream
That had been discussed a bit in earlier posts in this thread. The alumni corps are by no means recreating original shows (not that I'm advocating for that myself), nor do I believe they are physically able to to so. when alumni corps first rolled onto the scene, it was very much OTL, and drill like the old days from pretty much everyone. I still remember the crowd in 02 when the Royal Airs were announced as "on the starting line", and they even brough a gun with them to fire at the appropriate times. Since then, really the only alumni corps I've seen that do what I'd call a serious amount of drill is Cabs and Bridgemen. and at best, it's drill up to about 1980 design. The catch is most alumni corps members are getting older. A majority of the corps don't have an active corps to feed them bodies, or they rely on peple who never marched there to jump in. Unless more corps that are active start them up, I fear the alumni movement will slowly fade away.

Only so much room in the stands. I think they sold out Michigan City for Finals last year, it's not a huge place.

Thanks, I thought it might be so. But by suggesting that Open Class championships could be more successful if held in Avon Lake (one-day attendance 3,200) than in Michigan City (two-day paid attendance 1,400), I was responding to GUARDLING's complaint that O.C. wasn't attracting many fans: "1400 people is a success? What did that pay for? (Not much.) A WGI regional gets more than that." My point being, O.C. apparently can attract a larger crowd than he thought. Edited March 11, 2014 by N.E. N.E. Brigand
I'm not disagreeing that it would be great if more people attended Open Class shows. I'm just noting that the example of Avon Lake indicates that higher attendance can be achieved.

Michigan City is where they chose to have it, since it's historical place that really supports drum corps. The city supports it and loves when the corps come to town, every corps gets police escorts, there's a nice atmosphere. Avon Lake is a nice place for a show, but isn't quite the same. If they could get people to attend the shows the rest of the year, Open Class would be in a healthier place. Or if the people who showed up for OC Finals showed up for Prelims to support those kids, would be a good start. Just need people to show up at the beginning of shows and give some love and support to the smaller corps.
