A "Tradition Corps"? What do you think?

Recommended Posts

It can be, there have been some bigger shows from an attendance standpoint. Michigan City is where they chose to have it, since it's historical place that really supports drum corps. The city supports it and loves when the corps come to town, every corps gets police escorts, there's a nice atmosphere. Avon Lake is a nice place for a show, but isn't quite the same.

I've only been to Michigan City once and without time to have a look around, but based on just that short visit, I absolutely concur that it has more character than Avon Lake does.

If they could get people to attend the shows the rest of the year, Open Class would be in a healthier place. Or if the people who showed up for OC Finals showed up for Prelims to support those kids, would be a good start. Just need people to show up at the beginning of shows and give some love and support to the smaller corps.

That sort of wish goes back pre-DCI, and also in the DCI era at local small-corps-circuit shows (e.g. GSC), or class 'B' portions of large events like the World Open where small corps would perform to the judges, staff members, friends/family, and hardly anybody else.

youre right..in some respects thats what has always been annoying a bit. Many will condemn the bigger corps for everything under the sun and also expect them to take care of etc etc and support verbally the smaller corps , maybe because many feel its the right thing to do ( maybe it is ) yet NEVER set foot in a smaller corps show OR spend all their time in the lot and ONLY going into a show when the bigger corps is on. Thats all fine and I'm not telling anyone what they should or shouldn't do BUT dont condemn anyone else for something they arent supporting when neither are you....JMO

That was totally uncalled for. I fail to see where N.E. Brigand was "condemning" anybody. Then, you condemn him because if he cannot fit Michigan City into his schedule, he does not support smaller corps? No other shows count toward that? I guess none of the 3200 spectators in Avon Lake support smaller corps, according to you.

...noone was condeming him..I was speaking in general BECAUSE there are plenty here who condemn the bigger corps for everything concerning the smaller corps and what those corps should always be doing for the little guy....thats all well and good BUT those same people obviously ( at least many ) dont support by showing up at their shows. 3200 at a show..thats great now do it more than once...you actually think 3200 at a show actually makes a dent in cost for a season?....ive been at shows and wonder how they even paid for a stadium or anything for a show..thats how little people are there....its an old story.....people run and support the big guys mostly...and thats fine BUT dont condemn corps for what they arent doing for the little guy UNLESS youre ready to step up yourself...NOW and this is where you are confused ..when I say YOU I mean people in general and looking at themselves!...some wantt the little guy to have a voice...Im pointing out that ..this can happen when the little guy is looked at more seriously..and that means $$ coming in...as I have said WGI finally realized that although the world guards are the ones everyone runs to the High school A guards are the cash cow in WGI.

Also if you look at my response to him I tell him he was right...my 1st 2 words...pay attention..jk... :tounge2: ..lol

A stadium and city's "character" is nice and all, but I'd much rather have 2x the audience for my championship show.

Mike

Would be nice, but the directors made the call to keep it in Michigan City because of the atmosphere and history

I'd love to hit an OC show. the closest one is 4+ hours away on a weeknight.

That had been discussed a bit in earlier posts in this thread. The alumni corps are by no means recreating original shows (not that I'm advocating for that myself), nor do I believe they are physically able to to so.

True, but many alumni corps are aiming for that "old school" flavor that the original poster is talking about. Are they junior corps caliber for the eras they represent? No. But it is a good window to the past that exists now.

  • 2 months later...

Yeah bringing up an old thread because something still burns me months later. Apparently some here think that when there are a bunch of shows over a weekend, if you skip one that means you don't care (or hung over). My wife and I have missed one of these shows a couple of times over the years, not because we didn't care but because of physical disability. When you have a physical problem you really have to pay attention to your self and if your body says "skip a show" you ####### skip it. In fact while I was swapping heated posts on this thread my wife was in the hospital and quite frankly we didn't know if she would be OK, dead or worse.... She is, thank God, home after a month in the hospital and 2 in a therapy facility with months of home rehab to come. Because of this we will not be making any shows.

And if anyone thinks this is being lazy or don't care (yes we were called that) be smart and keep it to yourself. After the last few months I'll be ###### if I take any more insults to the toughest lady I know....

Just think of the old saying about "don't judge until you've walked a mile in the other persons shoes". Or in this case "using the other persons walker or wheelchair".
