Why is this HS Band show better designed than half the 2015 top 12?

Recommended Posts

Sorry, 12 pages late. The most obvious answers for the differences in BOA and DCI are DCI's advantage in rehearsal time, BOA's advantage in the sheer number of participating groups (much more musical and visual diversity), and the more relaxed mindset about BOA regarding music design. I don't remember where I saw the quote this year, but one DCI designer compared the two by saying BOA has more of an arthouse movie mentality, while DCI is about the summer blockbuster.

according to this: http://regiment.org/staff/don-hill/ the answer is yes.

check the date of publication for the above link.

The link may be a bio for the 2015 Regiment show and doesn't mean he's the only arranger used by BA for Fall 2015 after he left Regiment staff. Check BA bios..

I know of bands (and corps) that have master arrangers and then specialists who tweak. Blue Devils of Concord are one such.

This current DCP story seems to negate much of the OP's original premise: http://www.carolinacrown.org/web/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=669:crown-influence-at-boa-nationals&catid=88&Itemid=553

Just proves, never confuse a theory with facts.

why do you think this negates to original premise? because some of the same folks are involved?

If Don Hill could do so well with BA, why were the arrangements for Regiment so overwritten?

Maybe DCI judges want more notes or they score down for lack of difficulty?

Looks like there is still a little Black Gold influence. Wes is still listed as "Program Design" and "Color Guard".

If you have not been around there, you have to realize the tradition in that area. BA is the big dog but Union, Owasso, Jenks heck even 3A(BOA Class A) Berryhill that went to Indy are all great, great programs and do BOA with the best of them. These are all within a 40-50 mile area of each other in Tulsa. Big, BIG suburban schools with big bands, money to burn and the urge to win. And some quality DCI staff working their "other gig".

Black Gold, though short lived, was part of the tradition of the area.

In a complete coincidence, the second-place show at BoA Finals this year was titled "Black Gold", and was presented by Avon high school from Indiana, whose nickname is the "Black and Gold" (which makes it surprising that they hadn't thought of doing an oil-themed show before).
