Lead
Obtaining synch rights is the responsibility of the producer of the media, not the corps. The corps are only responsible for performance and arranging rights, *not* synch rights. In fact, there are provisions in copyright law preventing producers of media from passing along the cost of those rights...which is why such a rule won't work. Corps are only responsible for obtaining synch rights if they produce and sell their own video media. Which is why you've seen SUCH FEWER 'Tour Videos' and individual corps CDs/DVDs (think "Through the Years") on sale from souvie trucks. Yep. For a long time, most of that stuff was unlicensed. Heck, almost everything produced in audio format (LP, cassette, CD) certainly was. Every once in a while someone asked why DCI hasn't released Ken Kobold's archives. That's the reason why. Same with Fleetwood.
jjeffeory
Yes and no. DCI is a separate organization who's board is made up of member corps, yes (which is where the "DCI is the corps" line comes from). However, in the case of media production DCI is *not* the individual corps. I got ya. ...and they ARE still working in the interest of the members corps, so that's a good thing... This has just been a horrible issue and DCI should get massive kudos for getting this far with it for sure. fecontra
Is there anyone in DCA who I can contact to obtain the directors cut of the alumni spectacular? I can provide DCA with the directors name IMHO no connection with corps administration. Thanks DCI for producing the Blu Ray frankiE
ibexpercussion
So basically 1/4 of the Cavies show was omitted? Anyone know the difference between the choice to "omit" and "edit" on the Blu-Rays/DVDs?
Michael Boo
Anybody here know what the cut from Boston's show was for? You'll notice in the store that the show is no longer listed as having a cut.

Anyone know the difference between the choice to "omit" and "edit" on the Blu-Rays/DVDs? I believe that they use omitted for complete cuts from the disc, like Cavies and Crown 2011 and edits are to denote changes or alterations such as muting like Cadets 2012 or blackouts like Scouts 2011. Fran Haring
Additional problems arise with synchronization licenses, which are required when pre-recorded audio is fixed to a moving visual image…something that occurs in television shows and commercials…and DCI DVDs. Such a license is not required for live performances, which is why those who attended DCI’s “Big, Loud & Live 7” Quarterfinals broadcast were able to enjoy watching Scouts’ “Empire State of Mind” in its entirety. Yet another reason to go see the corps in person... either at a stadium or the theater for the Thursday show. Of course, this conjures up a failed marketing slogan: "Come see a drum corps show!!! You never know when the DVDs will suck."
Jeff Ream
Yea, DCA should waste money obtaining synch rights to produce a DVD that they won't sell. Because screw financial responsibility, right? You do realize your corps could produce it's own DVD for sale, right? Of course, that puts your corps on the hook for synch rights... DCA can't even get 5000 in the stands for finals. at best they are breaking even on dvd's
