The problem with Levis Stadium is while the climate is great, a design flaw in the stadium causes people sitting in certain areas to roast.

I've been there during sunny days and that was soo over blown. The people complaining were the people use to the cold windy environment of Candlestick Park. Levi stadium yes does have its issues but being in the sun is not one of them.

So will one of the casinos give odds on the contest?

I need a few more people to die before I can go back to Vegas, j/k. I’m not a Vegas fan and would have no interest in going there even for a show and yes, I only know the tourist junk and not ‘the real Vegas’ so no offense

I recall they had some Vegas shows there not too long ago, they tried some new format to spice it up. Seems to me, that if it was that great a draw, they'd still be doing them

I have my doubts as to the local market, demand as a marching band show couldn't really compete against all the other stuff  but I did read about Vegas trying to buy culture, maybe if the city offset the lack of a market with a massive incentive package sponsoring a show

Drums Along the Strip took place once in 2009 and featured at least four World Class corps including BD and Bluecoats, but it wasn't a sanctioned DCI show. IIRC, it was one of the examples that lead to the G7 debacle the following year, with some corps advocating for a different format. Drums Along the Strip didn't even have judges. The event was really well received on the local level among the music community despite being a weeknight event, and has even lead to some local schools chartering buses to the Pasadena show in later years as it's our closest opportunity, but the stadium created some drawbacks. It was at the current UNLV football stadium, which is in no close proximity to lodging and is generally a low-quality venue in general compared to other collegiate stadiums. These issues with the stadium are part of the larger discussion concluding this week, which resulted in UNLV's football team playing at this Raiders stadium as well.

The info given to me by those show organizers was that the resolutions that ultimately came from the G7 situation resulted in the corps agreeing to not perform in non-sanctioned shows, which killed Drums Along the Strip's future.

Can't comment on "buying culture", but hotels offering room blocks and preferred rates for event groups is extremely commonplace here.

Since Atlanta and Las Vegas are on opposite sides of the country, switching one to the other would cause major touring problems. That being said, I think San Antonio works well when and where it is, Allentown is the oldest DCI tradition outside of finals. I would suggest alternating between Las Vegas and Atlanta. If Las Vegas is chosen, a local audience has to be grown. Lots of kids who march hail from Texas and for the Florida folks, Atlanta is a reasonable trip. Allentown has the northeast to draw on, and while it's an older crowd, long time fans flock to the show. Summer is quieter in Las Vegas, so it's probably not a place where people would go to a DCI show and then vacation. It's not a drum corps hotbed, and while I may be wrong, I do not hear of huge numbers of kids from Nevada, Montana, Idaho, etc. marching in drum corps. Folks in the West may like Las Vegas. According to Mapquest, it's 6 hours  from Tempe, 8 hours from Concord and Santa Clara, and 11 hours from Casper.

Maybe Cirque du Soleil will sponsor it. Or at least sponsor the Bluecoats.

It would be weird to be in Vegas and have to go someplace other than the strip. Maybe they'd offer a helicopter taxi? I know how to arrange that with the concierge.

Just joshing ouooga. Never a bad idea to think differently. And no location is perfect. I wonder if Vegas would be a cool new spot for the members.

There's usually at least one corps that does a rehearsal/free day out here, usually on their way to or from California. Next year I'm trying to get our host committee to put up welcome signs for whoever that corps ends up being. And the new stadium's proposed site is basically right behind Mandalay Bay, so not too far from the Strip (hell, the Rio's further from the Strip than the stadium site). But a helicopter ride would definitely be cool! We actually have a few helicopter companies that partner with Uber to deliver exactly that. It's a fun town to live in. :)

So you believe DCI should cancel the July show in Mesa, AZ, which has a slightly higher average temperature?

I would rather rehearse in 103 degrees and very low humidity in Vegas than 95 degrees, much higher humidity, and higher heat index in Houston.  Vegas weather is more bearable for most people than the tropical humidity of the deep south.

I am not saying a night show in Mesa is the problem; nor would a show in the indoor stadium in Vegas be an issue. However, I believe that due to the extreme physical exertion it takes to rehearse and perform a DCI show, that type of physical activity should 'never' occur outside during the day anywhere that temps on average reach 103* - 106* or higher.

Good lord, if I were a corps administrator I couldn't in good conscience send someone else's kids out to a day of rehearsal in Vegas any time between July 1 and September 30. 150 counts of manslaughter just waiting ot happen. As was suggested elsewhere, you'd need acres of indoor, air-conditioned field facilities to pull it off.
