What’s interesting for me is while 7th place shows have impressed the adjucaters, they are less memorable than the 8th - 12th place performances to me.

I'm going with The Cadets 2018. By season's end this show was hitting the sweet spot for fans and the judges seemed to like it as well. I was a big fan of the Bartok show by SCV in 2010. That would be my runner-up.

An acquaintance of mine, a music critic in California, mentioned on his blog yesterday how he's traveling to Alberta next week for the Banff International String Quartet Competition. He's been preparing by studying the scores to Bartók's quartets (he's attending for pleasure, not as a judge), since a number of the competitors will be playing those gnarly works. He says he mentioned to someone that he was "going to be hearing a lot of Bartók there, and someone thought I'd said 'bar talk.' Well, a lot of that too, actually."

BK this year.  Been giving that views and listens since finals night and it's impressively seamless.

Three of these are great, and the other seven are at best forgettable and at worst........just not good.

I ended up choosing BK 2019 for how refreshingly gorgeous it was. Boston 2012 and Cadets 2018 are my honorable mentions.

Sort of an un-sweet spot? More technical difficulty than the competition, which was content to lean on audience engagement?
