It could be argued that Regiment has been doing "four (or so) pieces of music" for the last several years, including the Will Pitts era. And they weren't necessarily easy to follow. 

Your point is noted, but I think you're oversimifying things a bit.

The guard has got such a great "chillin out on the block" thing going as they start.  Blue Stars have had some really great guards in recent years

It's not just the number of horns on the field.  It's that Blue Stars sound going on.  I can't quite explain how they get a distinctive sound going but there's something about the top to bottom fullness of how they play their arrangements that's fantastic.
