Blue Devils in the Details 2023

This is the show I watched on thanksgiving day as a freshman in high school just finishing his first marching season that made me fall in love with drum corps.

BD constantly winning on show designs I hate is how I am falling out of love with drum corps.

But you’re not in high school anymore.

And the people who are in high school — the people we need, because they may march someday, and will carry this legacy forth — are being inspired by what’s put out today. Doesn’t that count for anything? They weren’t even alive in 1993!

It’s not that your opinion doesn’t matter. It’s this: The best, most generous, most unselfish thing you could possibly want for this activity is for young people to fall in love with it the way that you once did. And this iteration of the activity is what they’re falling in love with. Look at all the excitement over BD playing songs that today’s kids love from anime, K-pop, and the rest. Look at the outpouring of love for Boston, Carolina, Phantom, etc etc etc last year, among young people. It seems to me that these corps are doing exactly what you are asking them to do — they’re just not doing it solely to satisfy people who had their drivers’ permits before their current MMs were even born. They haven’t forgotten you: they call back to the past every year, especially BD. But they have a future to think about.

That doesn’t mean you have to like every change. But it does, I think, mean that we’d all be wise not to only see this as a zero-sum game that solely measures the activity in terms of what’s been lost.

In 20 years, these kids will be talking about the ballads from Metamorph and Babylon in exactly the same way that you’re talking about BD 93. BD (and the rest) haven’t “lost” anything. They’re finding new ways to be as meaningful to today’s youth as they were to the youth of yesteryear. That’s an inherent gain, IMHO.

I saw another video. Better sound, better visual. Now I get. The bones are definitely there for this to be a monster. And I could see much better how well the corps is moving.

BD is consistently strong in all performance captions, and other corps have proven capable at matching or surpassing them in score. Certainly Crown in brass, SCV percussion (not this year 😞) for many years, more recently BAC guard and others in guard, and many more examples.

The one area I see BD having a consistent clear advantage is in the quality of movement across the corps. I have always noticed it but heard/read it commented on more by others last year and maybe 2019.  Even there, that doesn’t always translate to a scoring advantage, even in a caption like VP. As I look back since 2013, it seems like the key to whether BD has the “it” factor is whether they can use that wow factor of their movement into strong GE.  It stands out to me how they did it in 2014, 2017, 2019, and 2022. Less clear is 2015 but a case can be made. In 2013, 2016 and 2018, all of which I loved, BD’s shows did not read as strongly for me, and thinking on it now, their shows didn‘t have them consistently moving like they owned that 100-120 yards, even though the shows were so great it was still plausible for them to win. Would love to hear other takes. Crown 2013, Bloo 2016, and SCV 2018 all brought powerful visual packages to the field that helped them push in front of BD, as a champion has to do for the last decade plus.

Looking forward to watching how “The Cutouts” evolves! BD will bring it as always, and they sure better this year! I think the competition will be amazing.

You hammered that nail in perfectly, and yet it will still not be enough. It get so exhausting to keep responding to the same mindset over and over. LMAO.. like they are not getting it, it's not so much for us anymore, it's for the now younger generations whose into BD type of a shows. Should the corps be stuck in the 70s, 80s, 90s, and early 2000s just for us. Like I just want to enjoy the season with the now generations too. Just leave them alone! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

I'll try not to detract from your enjoyment, I can handle the visual aspect of show design now, but the musical aspect for BD specifically is a hard sell for me. That's what's changed for me anyway. I used to relish their hornbooks, and now without Wayne Downey arranging and composing it all, or the changes he's made to his arranging, it's just not the same.

I agree with some points you make except saying, "that's the problem" why is it a problem ? I frankly love their approach to design process that's what i am talking about..  I think your talking about formula like many others do, which is different. it's either approach to their formula, or Approach in their design process in which i speak of and think it's one of the best approach i've seen from Drum Corps.

Most of the complaints is about their formula being repeated, in which most of top corps do the same. Blue Devils just happens to change their formula over a decade ago, and it allows them to still explore many themes. It's not broken yet so they MAY not see the need to drastically change it right and i dont see anything wrong with that, ok. I think it's a 'we problem' on how we think they should be, and not a BD problem. I am one of those who still enjoys what they put out regardless.. Yes BC is the risk taker, and i love BC for that, I LUUUUUVEM!! that don't mean BD need to be a risk taker right now too.

I say let the corps do what they do, we can like it or not like it and still enjoy all things corps, it's Marching, Music Sports for me so yes we all wont love or like the same things about all of them. I believe they will change the formula when they see fit. 2007 some people didn't like their approach, 2008 and forward even worst and i can understand, So when the time comes when they decide to explore new formulas, we will still have people saying i don't like BD . I think they actually do new things from time to time, it's just that you still have a set of people who complain still, pointing out the splint in BD eyes, while ignoring the logs in many other corps eyes. and i know where those complaints are coming from.

So when should a zilion time champion take some chances and change direction....after two zillion championship wins?  They took chances before but for some reason they are staying a course and not veering.  In 1996 and 1997 BD won and in 1998 they took a complete left turn and did something completely different.  Like it or not, it was an interesting experiment and approach.  This ongoing 10+ year approach is stale IMO.  If I had time I could compile so many exact musical moments BD has done from year to year it would probably shock people.

I think we can easily agree that corps at the top influence what other corps do right?  Been going on for years. So, BD ditches most of what some would call traditional drill and instead uses staging.  Just like that BD has abandoned something that I think most drum corps fans enjoy; i.e. drill.  Not for a year or two but what appears to be forever (And BD performing traditional drill for 25% or less of their program is not enough to say they march drill IMO)  So, just like that we have almost lost the art of drill in drum corps because of an ongoing formula to do what....win another zillion championships?  If we totally lose drill it would be a real loss because honestly it is unique to the activity and impressive as heck when done well.

Eh, kind of on a ramble but bottom line is I would love to see team Concord take some left turns with their show choices and design.....it would be sooooo refreshing.   Oh, and as far as people not liking corps, that has been going on forever.  As a 'Drum Corps FAN' I dont get that.  I am there to enjoy the show and the more corps I enjoy the better!!   I don't care what corps it is  🙂

I hope next year they do a show about complaints. I hope they incorporate the exact presentation from 2 years ago but containing select rants from this board, translated to Tamil.

Song selections:

Here I Go Again: Whitesnake,

One More Time: Daft Punk,

More of You: Stonebwoy,

Again: Janet Jackson,

I Want It That Way: Backstreet Boys ,

Too Bad: King Princess

With samples of “the song remains the same” and “back in the high life again”. Or maybe we can do a medley of your suggested “one more time” by Daft Punk by adding Britney’s and the captain and tenille’s versions as well!

BD would have to incorporate this all time classic from Michael Jackson in the Complaints Show.

Michael made this song in direct response to the Media, Paparazzi etc, since any and everything he did was being scrutinized.

This is the perfect song that explains what BD goes thru every year from the ABBD Crowd, to other assorted trolls, haters, and basement dwellers.

Not to mention this is one of the coolest music videos in history.

LOVE the guard uniforms and the corp attire underneath the jacket (blue with the pink sash). Not so sure about the jacket that goes on top of that. Like someone else said, hopefully they look better while they’re moving!

Still better than the 2010s Carolina Crown lookalikes that Boston is trotting out, the memes just write themselves
