BlueStainGlass
So back in the day Corps made bank off of Bingo halls and some may still do that. Recently alot of the top tier groups have been making business deals with companies and starting outside programs. What ways do corps survive now besides dues, donations, and souvies? Or if you were in charge of a group how would you start a revenue stream? Welcome to the offseason!

Mom and Dad pony up $50 so that Missy piccolo gets a T-shirt, hot dog, cheap seat and a chance to play a few bars with the All-Stars. 2

Or if you were in charge of a group how would you start a revenue stream? Welcome to the offseason! Any discussion of what corps should do to generate revenue, should begin with understanding where they currently are in the revenue-making results. Taken directly from www.guidestar.org, the revenue numbers paint a rather interesting picture. It should be pointed out that BD, SCV, and Cadets have organizations larger than most. In the case of BD, they generate, by far the most revenue. SCV pales in comparison to BD even though they, too, are well ahead of anyone else in DCI. 2017 Placement / Corps / $ Revenue as last reported 1. Blue Devils / Performing Arts for Youth $23,964,680 2. SCV / Vanguard Music and Performing Arts $15,060,214 3. Carolina Crown, Inc $3,219,205 4. Cavaliers $1,564,612 5. Bluecoats $5,432,421 6. BAC / Inspire Arts and Music, Inc $3,393,914 7. Cadets / YEA $6,157,771 8. Blue Knights / Ascend Performing Arts, Inc $1,602,432 9. Phantom Regiment $1,698,216 10, Bllue Stars / Performing Arts for Youth, Inc. $1,637,159 11. Crossmen / Crossmen Productions $1,536,865 12. Madison / Forward Performing Arts Inc / $1.315,088 Feel free to reference the above for further conversation within this thread. Or, if you'd like, use the revenue numbers as a basis for it's own discussion thread. Edited August 14, 2017 by drumcorpsfever

BD has system Blue and Crown has the CrownGuard store with tarps and etc. What could legends do to stabilize for the future for instance? Those numbers can be misleading. If you look at the 990 for 2015 for BD, their Bingo revenue is just over $21 million but the cash payouts, etc. means they only profited about $440k. They may have the most revenue but they clearly have the most expenses as well too that offset it.

garfield
Dang. And after this season was to begin the five-year refresh to the 990's thread. And GBass is correct - payout matters. The financial documents have both revenue and expenses. The one that threw me all those years ago was that DCI paid out something like $4million or so (IIRC) to produce shows. Many of us, myself included, couldn't figure out what they were spending it on until we figured out that the number included (and was primarily comprised of) payouts to the corps themselves. I'll enjoy looking at the numbers again in the spring after most of the 2016 990's will have been filed. I hadn't thought of it before but, if DCI's research is correct that the average fan's tenure is three years, there may be a bunch of people who've never seen the thread.

There's obviously more to the financials that express the financial heath of the organization. What the revenue numbers do express though is the scale of the organizations as indicated in my previous post. Anyone is certainly free to dig further into the 990's if you'd like. They're there for all to see.
