Santa Clara Vanguard 2024... All discussion on SCV here!
lawdn replied to Cainan's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
My impression is that SCV acts largely as a closed community focusing primarily if not exclusively on alumni and presumably MMs and their families, with little to no effort or outreach to other potential fans or supporters. Maybe it has always been true to some extent - their communication to this small donor struck me as saying I was fortunate to support them, vs. another that seemed more humble and encouraged to come see them at rehearsals and introduce myself to management - but it seems more pronounced since post 2022. They are free to choose what approach works best for them. It just seems like an outlier versus who I guess SCV would say are their peers. They are also probably leaving some money on the table at a time when they have announced a food and fuel fundraiser for 2024 season. P.S. in fundraiser release, they do note that preseason rehearsals are in Moscow, Idaho. So they did put that info out publicly. -
No. The thread âALL discussion on SCV hereâ is the title of the thread which allows for ALL discussion. Not negative as much as it includes reality. That includes criticisms and apologists but as yet, nothing about their 2024 program. That announcement is expected soon and eagerly awaited. So no, not hijacked, and the only negativity is the continued lack of communicating solutions.

Santa Clara Vanguard 2024... All discussion on SCV here!
lawdn replied to Cainan's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
Respectfully, I just checked BD and BAC websites, and they post information about spring training move-in dates and sites. I have not checked other corps, but feel free. -
That info has been shared in board meetings that are open to the public. Move in final weekend of May, as is customary for the corps... and they are moving in to the University of Idaho, which is less customary but saves them money. Camp info, especially dates, has always been shared, with or without exact location included IIRC. If stakeholders and alumni want this info, I'm pretty sure they just need to send an email. As I've said before, if the org doesn't want info shared, they either shouldn't share it, or tell stakeholders what they want kept under wraps. Most stakeholders will be glad for the info and will joyfully keep it to themselves. Secrecy is not becoming for a non profit, though, unless it's for security purposes.

I got a bit of insider information. The theme is going to be Reconciliation and Redemption. They will start with Oops I Did It Again by Britney Spears. Followed by Blame Game by Kanye West. Then as they transition to the Reconciliation part of the show, Please Forgive Me by Bryan Adams. Then finish with moving and inspirational excerpts from Mahlerâs Resurrection Symphony. It promises to be a great return to the field by the 2024 Vanguard.

Same.

It might not be advisable to go that route quite yet. You would want to see how the bankruptcy proceedings play out to make sure someone doesn't acquire the name/assets through those proceedings first. Once those proceedings are complete and the current iteration of the Cadets has wound down, you would likely be more in the clear. That's not to say that you couldn't already be working on incorporating and establishing a 501(c)(3) under a different name, with the intention of using the "Cadets" name as a DBA or simply a program name once things settle down.

Yes. But, personally I say let it sleep. Let it stand as a beacon, possibly the beacon of modern drum corps as we know it, and as a cautionary tale of the realities of behavior and consequences in youth activities. It's not binary, one or the other. It's both. Besides, pick any top corps. You've got Rarick designing Bluecoats percussion forever now. You've got Derek Gipson running their brass. You've got Jared Huntley running visual. You've got Dan Riley captioning SCV guard. Cavaliers has Aungst & Stratton advising. You've got Sacktig, Klesh & Scully on design at Crown. And while his resume is far more expansive than just Cadets, let's not forget that Harloff was at Cadets brass staff late 90s (that jump in brass quality in 98). At Boston, 7 out of 11 design team members marched at or taught at Cadets. Brass & Battery instructional staff for the most part were literally the Cadets staff before it exploded. Hell, even at Blue Devils the electronics manager is a former Cadet. Let the corps rest and be at peace. What makes things in life special is that they end. You want to see the Cadets? Watch DCI drum corps in general. The Cadets are everywhere.

I think the declaration from the org. to provide visibility, is what they are actually expected to provide. Not just continuing lip service. To actually provide visibility and follow through on what they say they will do. We see statements with no follow up, no status updates on where they are with fixing their financial ship in the past 2 years they have had to do so. They are a non profit org, involved in a larger youth activity, raising and spending funds with the welfare of kids at stake. Not to mention donors contributing money and not knowing where it all goes. This smacks of organizational ego that doesnât like being questioned, when questioning practices (on a few levels) is exactly what is warranted. The longer it takes for the compliance to be completed, the increase in questions grows. It begins to appear that they are unable to fix it or something more nefarious has occurred. But then this is just my opinion. Itâs possible others share this opinion.

The last time I was on UR's field (JMU MRDs were performing) my tuba bell was hit with a beer can, as were many of us. Scratch that... that was halftime. The real last time was when we performed post game... and they shut the stadium lights off on us in the middle of our performance. lol good times đ You're right, though... it'd be a good stadium for a show! -

PA doesnât tax retirement either, military or civilian. That 3% Helps with the retirement check (well direct deposit) every month. edit: PA does get you on interest and dividends just not whatâs in ye olde 1099-R -
It's not just me. When they make decisions about finances, I want them to be open and communicative about it. Proactive about communication rather than inform us after the fact because we asked. That's what forward thinking non profits do. That's what non profits that actually want to regain the trust of weary stakeholders do. Instead of that, they've already started asking for donations. You know, not unlike the ones they asked for while delinquent that nearly everyone has conveniently forgotten about. And donations? When they have not one, but now two bingo operations? ExplĂcame eso. Again, everything else about their goings on is not normal. You're still not addressing the context of past delinquencies and historical member abuse. You have however addressed the revolving door, which is, again, only one factor. It's not entirely revolving anyway, there is a core of leadership that has been on the board well beyond reasonable terms of service. Some of them were around during bad deciding making regarding JF. Others for even more bad decision making. Pushing them publicly has also worked in the past. And it's about all I can abide at this point when they consistently ghost their own stakeholders. It's less than ideal, but it's what our communication has devolved to, and it takes two to tango. Doom and gloom, no. Shame, yes. And, well, you are continuing to ignore the context of the last 3 to 4 years, and beyond, that I've brought up in my last several comments. Good for you. I wish I could too and just enjoy the members' hard work. We're probably done here unless you want to finally address any of that, respectfully. And it's too bad that critical feedback is interpreted as doom and gloom, but again you'll find great company among my fellow alum.
