  1. 2011 Cadets. Half the corps was off for most of the show. Came in at the wrong time. Couldn't lay their instruments in a straight line. Didn't even wear the correct uniforms.

  2. This is just flat out misinformation. Completely utterly false. There's a clear pattern developing with this users's posts. Not gonna go any further than that. But its bloody obvious why he keeps seeing things that no one else seems to see. FWIW most guards I see (both locally, WGI, and youtube) seem to be very sensitive to the performers wearing their uniforms. Sure there are a few idiots who ignore their kids (and their body types) and put them into less than flattering uniforms but the vast, vast majority of instructors are very aware of what they put on their kids. As for dance, my guess is that ballet -- any ballet -- is overtly sexual to the poster in question. In fact the vast, vast majority of guard shows don't contain sexual innuendo at all. Few designers go any where NEAR that sort of dance or programming. Why? Because most guards are scholastic; the performers have parents; the parents go to the shows. And most parents are more than willing to go complain to a school administrator about what Johnny or Suzie are being asked to do.

  6. Ever watch much opera? Talk about some crazy stuff that would be considered pretty controversial in our circles. Yet I don't see you railing against them and judging those who enjoy it. I mean Carmen is about a hooker. Porgy and Bess? Miss Saigon(musical I know, based somewhat on an opera).

  7. What makes you think that "more and more" ARE looking like that? A few cutting edge shows out of the thousands of indoor guard shows coast to coast?

  10. No Stu.. I make no judgement on the makeup of audiences, nor on their personal tastes. I make the observation in a reply to a poster above that stated that controversial shows bring audiences, and they stay. That was my reply. There is nothing to " respectfully disagree " with me on here, as the 2 options you have provided to me, I've made no comment on here.

  11. controversial shows in WGI have packed the arena in a thunderous arena shaking applause. This is a fact. I know many kids who have gone to ( lets say Fantasia for programming reasons...DCI I dont think theres that many controversial shows IMO .

  13. one problem. the membership of DCI isn't the Open Class corps.

  14. well if DCI angers you so, there's always DCA. who puts out far less material about the behind the scenes stuff than DCI does.

  15. Fran, I completely 100% agree with you. Which should probably worry you just a bit... Well said.

  16. just remember though. like in effect captions, everyone get confused on alot ( even some judges ) and yes it's subjective ( as in most things in the activity ) So there will always be an ongoing debates, disagreements, head scratching etc etc. Those who need things to be black and white will not be happy for sure. The activity IMO as great as it has become in many areas is ALL very grey.

  17. I've been around drum corps since 1967. I am well aware of how the judging system functions. And I absolutely agree with you, it's not about perfection, per se... but about which unit is the best in a given caption. Ranking and rating. And I certainly prefer the current system over the old "tick" system, which, IMO, was as subjective, if not more so, than the current one. But I still gotta figure... a 99.15 is an indication that a corps is pretty #### good.... clean, if you will. Not a lot of problems with their show.

  19. If the guitar player is in the front ensemble, I would bet he's being adjudicated by the: * percussion judge * MA judge * GE music judge Percussion makes the most sense, because those instruments are common in the winter percussion world and thus judged by the music/percussion judges and effect judges at those competitions. Also, to be blunt, DCP doesn't necessarily need to know which captions something is judged by: DCI and its member corps do, and I suspect they do.

  20. OK, how about "Cadets 1993 would be like 8th in field visual today."

  21. That's the funky thing about judging. We as fans, or even members, are likely always thinking about the big picture/total package. But NONE of the judges really think that way: they think in terms of a very specific caption with specific criteria in mind. The Effect judges come the closest to evaluating the total package, but even then the sheets skew to a narrow(ish) focus. The DCI scores currently are the sum/average of TEN people's rankings/ratings, and just because a corps scores lower on one sheet doesn't mean the corps can't max out every other sheet and still win.

  22. Not only 63 Am. Legion Nat's in Miami, but the Dream and World Open. Plus that first big show of the year, The Preview of Champs at Roosevelt Stadium. That's quite a trip to the trophy case I'd say. We saw them twice late September and they were close to perfection. I think only Garfield and St. Kevin's beat them in 63.

  23. effect, ensemble, and it is possible the percussion judge will comment on them.

  28. In 2014 Drum Corps Associates is celebrating its Golden Anniversary as we need to start at the beginning on how this all came about. 30. well no. you see, if you truly judge the show of the day, in an enclosed venue, a lot of the percussion issues are masked. With the accoustics as they are, plus that brass wall of sound and stuff being amplified...the battery disappears. and honestly, until you get finals back outside, issues like this can occur far more often

  31. The leafless trees to which you refer were the result of an absolutely devastating brush fire back in the Spring of '64 that took out an awful lot of the South Shore of Staten Island. The photo is from late May, early June of '64. BTW, he told me he missed his Senior Prom; BS had practice!

  33. Fran - you're leaving out one of the holy places of the activity - Randall's Island. I was there one night in 1983 (might have been 84 - sue me - it's 30 years ago) when Bucky's pinto was stolen WHILE he was using it to shine light on the horn arc - ended up dumped over on the West Side of 125th. Randall's Island. Not Aruba or St Marten, but a hot spot of drum corps travel nonetheless.

  34. DCI will allow corps to get special age allowances for guest stars like Justin Bieber, Lil Wayne, Chris Brown, Katie Perry and Lindsay Lohan. They will sing, rap and dance to the music. After that, music judges will be eliminated for D-list stars like Dennis Rodman, Flavor Flav and Michael Lohan.

  35. John Simpson and the Sky Ryders will forever be responsible for creating one of the most memorable periods of my life. That bio entry almost reads like a play-by-play of my summer of ’82. The Kerchner charts… The monstrous K-90… and that unmistakable Simpson Sound. I wish I was a stronger wordsmith. John Simpson deserves much more that the few lines of praise that my simple vocabulary can muster for this post.
