  1. Who stayed in hotels in the 80s? I marched/taught through most of the decade and never saw the inside of a hotel.
  2. Order of performance for all shows other than regionals is set pre-season.
  3. Great job by Academy! So clever and entertaining!
  4. Dave McGrath named Program Coordinator at Cavaliers. https://www.cavaliers.org/news/cavaliers-welcome-mcgrath-program-coordinator
  5. Smokers are the minority, but they're still out there.
  6. Percussion wasn't their only weakness last year.
  7. There are several issues contributing to the housing situation. The education community is gradually moving toward longer school years with shorter summer breaks. Depending on where you are, it's not uncommon for schools to be in session until mid or late June and others start as early as August 1. Of course the early start date pushes things like band camps and football practices back into July. School districts are much less willing to take on liability for outside groups. In many cases, they don't mind corps using the facilities but the fact that they sleep there overnight is a deal breaker. Everybody is looking for more money. There are schools that charge up to $1,000 per day to house a corps. It's a pretty hefty sum when you multiply it by the 80-90 days of a typical season.
  8. Members are allowed to borrow phone from volunteers, management and staff. Post-show is a popular time for phone borrowing.
  9. The corps is just trying to figure out their numbers. Don't make up a story. Just be honest and tell him you haven't decided yet. If you tell him some BS and your paths cross later it makes you look stupid.
  10. If you want to talk with current Cavalier members, you should join one of these Facebook groups. You can ask any questions you want and get answers from the guys who live it every day. Brass: https://www.facebook.com/groups/830991826925629/ Percussion: https://www.facebook.com/groups/280888808776111/ (I'm assuming you're not looking to join the color guard.)
  11. If you're high school doesn't offer a winter guard, you should definitely look for an independent winter guard to join.
  12. A) That's not what he said. B) Judges don't judge individuals one at a time.
  13. Live music actually is allowed. From the 2014 WGI Color Guard Rule Book: 4.3.2 Performers playing musical instruments or singing using a 115/120-volt power source provided to allow amplification is permitted in the competition area. A few groups have tried it, but it never really caught on.
  14. Winter Guard actually IS "ALL about the Visual." It's not meant to be a performance opportunity for musicians. BTW: I think WGI Winds is a great idea and I look forward to seeing how it evolves.
  15. Interesting. Here are two issues I see right off the bat: 1) In the current structure, many corps are reluctant to come out after 4 weeks of rehearsal. Cutting that to 2 would mean more incomplete shows or a serious change in the depth and quality of shows being performed. 2) In addition to performance fees, corps benefit from the fact that show sponsors provide housing to the corps. If you eliminate all weekday shows (Mon-Thu) the cost of that housing would be passed on to the corps, driving up dues.
  16. Or you start a new corporation with a different name.
  17. It's not always a question of what's cheaper. Many corps have audition camps in multiple locations. Making it easier for potential members to get to an audition increases the odds of attracting the best talent.
  18. Is there ever a case where you think it's acceptable to set your own minimum standard, or must it always be determined by someone else?
  19. So if I set a personal goal of 75% and I get 72% I'm a failure, but if I set a goal of 71% and get the same 72% I'm a success?
  20. If it's so easy to spot Cavaliers talking on A phone in the lot after shows, wouldn't you think the corps leadership would also see it? So what are they hiding? What you are more likely seeing is corps members using phones borrowed from staff, management and volunteers, (which they are allowed to do).
