  1. "I wish I had spent more time on my career," said no one on their death bed ever. : )
  2. I think this is a little overstated but not entirely so. I didn't miss a championship between my age out in the early '80s to 2009, and then the balance tilted more toward changes I didn't like. Haven't been to anything but a regional show since. A lot of my friends from my era feel the same. Not angry about it or anything...just not worth paying thousands of dollars to go to championships anymore.
  3. I get that things have to evolve, but I would be disappointed if I were a member. Cavs unis have been one of my favorites over the last 20+ years. These are cool...but they're not as cool. The previous update Michael talks about from the '80s still very much connected with the corps' historic identity. These...not as much. Personally, I think this is a slight miss.
  4. I don't do sarcasm. It's cheap humor. Have you actually seen BD this year? There's not one quiet moment in the show. It's all in your face. I'm sure that's some folk's cup of tea. Not so much mine.
  5. So is the Blue Devils design staff incapable or unwilling to do anything subtile and finessed? Seems like we get beast mode only from them these days.
  6. Am I remembering correctly that Bill Cook got involved in drum corps when his son marched Colts? Is this the son? Check out #26. http://www3.forbes.com/investing/the-richest-person-in-every-state/28/ And if so, isn't $6.7 billion enough reason to start another corps in Indiana?
  7. Brasso beat me to it, but I had the same idea. Hence, I'll split costs with him on his proposal. And when Blue Devils can't compete and want to merge (giving The Balls BOD and staff full control, of course), we will gracious agree to meld the names, making the new corps The Blue Balls.
  8. Answer to the subject line. It's not. Sorry. Not being a drum corps homer. I spent many more years in marching bands than in drum corps. But marching band just isn't at the same level as the majority of top 12 DCI corps. I do appreciate, though, that this band is great...for a HS band.
  9. Sequels: Ava, Hannah, Nolon, Pip, Otto, Elle, Nan, Lil, Izzi, Eve, Anna, Ara, Viv, and Ada.
  10. 1984 Freelancers. 20 guard members playing sop in "You're Still a Young Man" opener. Soloist was David Wales? Is that right? What a perfect name for a soprano soloist.
  11. I've always though the SF Bay area was ripe for an all-male corps called the San Quintin Felon-airs. Or would it be Fellow-nairs?
  12. How many guard judges are there in a given season? Can't be many since there's only a few shows a night. What I would really love to see on dci.org is a search function on the scores page that allows you to pull up results over an entire season or multiple seasons by judge. Do judges really feel the weight of accountability? Maybe a little more transparency would be a good thing. I've also wondered why some of these people have been allowed to judge for decades. They're human. They are going to preference a certain style or approach. They're going to have better relationships with one corps than another. And the old idea that you can count on judges to be as fair and impartial as possible is frankly bunk in a community as small as this one.
  13. I've thought the same thing. Something's just not working.
  14. Heads held high, Crown. The win was (not should have been...was) yours.
  15. 1. Crown - Well deserved 2. Cadets - Great show that would have won any other year 3. Devils - I can't say anything nice, so... 4. Bluecoats - Energy! 5. Vanguard - It's inevitable, though I don't understand all the disrespect. 6. BK - Happy for BK. Coming on strong. 7. PR - Really entertaining 8. Scouts - So weird to see them beating Cavs, but they earned it. 9. Cavs - Who would have thunk it five years ago? And no reversal in sight. 10. Boston - BA 11. Blue Stars - Such a fun show 12. Crossmen - Best vocalist of the year
  16. Blah. One more step in the beiging out of an activity that used to be diverse and interesting. So be it.
  17. And, at some level, they are getting hosed. I'm a Crown alum, but even I can see that.
  18. I know it's supposedly too early to write anyone off, but I just don't see the path for every corps with whom my corps had a regional rivalry when I marched. RME.
  19. Is Hunter, that kid from the "Scouts Honor" movie, marching this summer? I remember the postscript of the movie saying that he couldn't march Summer 2014 due to family obligations. Just wondered if he made it back.
