  3. So it's the beginning of July. We've got a pretty good idea what most of the corps are doing and what many of them have achieved so far. The sleek new uniforms have been revealed, crazy props dragged all over the field, and people are lining up the strollers in the front row in baby-throwing anticipation. I'm always lurking and reading, and from what I can tell, these are the 5 corps with the most hype right now. (In no particular order) Mandarins - These guys have been slowly building a contender the past few years. They've got a great show design and performers that are keeping up with the demand Can they push their way into the top 12 this year? Bluecoats - Their show design is top notch. They're using that zig-zaggy prop in crazy creative ways. You won't be able to buy a bowler hat anywhere in the US come August. Blue Devils - A brass book that's got more runs than after a trip to Taco Bell. The visual is a step behind, but they are already executing at a high level. No one ever counts out BD. SCV - A really complete show design with medalist potential. They're easily keeping up with BD's scores out on the west coast. The circles are the bomb and they use them SO well. Boston Crusaders - They've been running with the new staff hype for a while, and so far they've delivered. Great music and high visual demand. How far up can they go? What do you think? Did I miss someone? Is there a corps that we haven't seen yet that'll make even bigger waves? (OC, Cascades, Surf) This is just my opinion, feel free to debate and discuss.

  6. Let's start a streak of me starting a thread, that leads to a championship.
  7. Colts 2019 (When Hell Freezes Over) Mandarins 2018 (and some might say 2019) Music City 2018 (Hell on Wheels) Crown 2015 (Inferno) SCV 2011 (The Devil's Staircase) Seems to be a pretty popular theme. Any ideas why? (Thinking too much about the Texas tour, maybe?)
  8. If this is a duplicate thread, Mods, please delete. Based on the FloMarching's SCV camp video and "First note of the 2019 Show" as well it being the 30th Anniversary of the winning 1989 Phantom of the Opera show, I speculate that this will be a Phantom reboot / nostalgia/ modernized show. As an aside, I hope they do it well, as I trust they would, and do a hot a hatchet job like Cavies did to Planets, or PR did to New World last year. Is there a place in modern DCI for nostalgia shows? Are we seeing an influx of them? Do we care? As an old guy, I love it and I hope it is happening. I would love to see Phantom of the Opera, Drum Corps Fans Dream-Pt.3, Shostakovitch from PR, etc. Maybe that is a different thread.
  9. (OK, maybe some hyperbole there, but read on!) These were Carolina Crown's percussion scores in Finals for the five years prior to last season: 2012 -- 18.800 (6th) 2013 -- 18.700 (6th) 2014 -- 18.450 (7th) 2015 -- 18.950 (5th) 2016 -- 18.675 (5th) (As given at the From the Pressbox website, which does seem to lop off decimals from time to time.) In those five years, it was repeatedly said on these forums and elsewhere (even by the commentators on the cinema screenings) that Crown's percussion was weak, bad, faulty, deficient, imperfect, defective, inferior, poor, lame, inadequate, shoddy, and so forth. And not just relatively bad but absolutely bad. I remember querying this point on more than one occasion. I noted that these are all Box 5 scores and thus, by any absolute measure, Crown was fielding very strong percussion lines. But no, came the replies: it wasn't just that Crown's percussion wasn't as strong as Crown's other elements or as other corps' percussion or that it was (with one exception) keeping them from a championship or medals position; no: Crown's percussion was just not good. That claim was made repeatedly. So these appear to be the five best scores achieved by DCI percussion this past weekend: 17.50 -- Cavaliers 17.50 -- Carolina Crown 17.25 -- Blue Devils 17.20 -- Santa Clara Vanguard 17.20 -- Boston Crusaders (I may have missed one or more, but you get the point. Again I used From the Pressbox as my source.) Not one Box 5 score among them, and yet commentators here are offering a fair bit of praise for these lines. But if you had a time machine and could drop any one of these corps of last weekend into the 2012-2016 Finals, surely their percussion would be crushed by Finals-Crown of those years . . . Wouldn't they? I'm genuinely curious to know what people think about that. Are these 2018 mid-season percussion scores too low? Were Crown's 2012-2016 Box 5 Finals percussion scores too high? That is to say: do Cavaliers right now actually have a Box 5 percussion section? And did Crown by Finals in 2012-2016 still have a Box 4 percussion section (or worse)? (How much improvement in numbers is real, relative to the descriptions on the sheets, and how much is just numbers management?) Or when people say that Crown's percussion as the 2012-2016 seasons ended was bad, is that a serious exaggeration? In scoring terms, where is the dividing line between good percussion and bad percussion anyway? Was Crown's percussion ever very good in those years? Is Cavaliers' percussion section already very good? Feel free to apply any of those questions to other elements or to corps as a whole. Already people are talking about how they have listened to this or that early season performance repeatedly. Does anyone do that with a poor performance? At what point, as far as scores are concerned, does a corps become worth listening to? I look forward to everyone's thoughts.

  11. After seeing the Blue Stars and Crossmen compete neck and neck with eachother all season this year, I began to wonder which corps might be in that same situation next season where they are right next to each other in terms of scoring and placement. My tight grouping predictions for next season are the following: Blue Devils v.s. Santa Clara Vanguard Santa Clara Vanguard v.s. Carolina Crown Bluecoats v.s. Cavailers Cadets v.s. Blue Knights Phantom Regiment v.s. Blue Knights Blue Stars v.s. Crossmen Madison Scouts v.s. Mandarins Troopers v.s. Colts Blue Devils B v.s. Vanguard Cadets Gold v.s. Golden Empire Seattle Cascades v.s. Jersey Surf Jersey Surf v.s. Pioneer Music City v.s. Genesis Battalion v.s. Columbians Impulse v.s. Shadow Shadow v.s. River City Rhythm Les Stentors v.s. Impulse Pacific Crest v.s. Oregon Crusaders Colts v.s. Academy Oregon Crusaders v.s. Spirit of Atlanta Again, these are just my predictions. What are your predictions? Do any of your predictions match any of mine? Do you agree or disagree with my predictions? Please comment in this thread and we will find out!
  12. Let's kick off the holiday season with the Corps with the most festive colors: Santa Clara Vanguard. What are your top 1-5 all time SCV shows? (Optional) What are your 1-3 least favorites from them? You can go into as much or little detail as you like but please please try to keep things positive. For a quick recap in case you missed it and/or want to add your contributions: Week 1- Cavies- 2006 the Machine is the favorite and 2012 15 min of fame is the least favorite. Week 2- Jersey Surf- 2012 Bridgemania favorite Week 3- Blue Knights-1994 Trittico for bras band favorite. least 2001Blue Toons Week 4- Spirit of Atlanta- 1980 favorite Week 5- Carolina Crown- Favorite: 2015 Inferno; Least Favorite: 2017 ...It is Week 6- The Mandarins- 2017 inside the ink for favorite. Week 7- Boston Crusaders- 2000 RED is the favorite. Week 8- Pioneer- 1996 Celtic Twilight is the favorite.
  13. What the heck is up with corps in which members are wearing no hats or shakos? The hat/shako was the crowing point of a uniform and truly identified a corps. Especially The Vanguard. Call me a fuddy-duddy, but I'm not liking this trend in DCI at all.
  14. I just realized something BIG about the planned 2017 tour schedule. BD and SCV aren't listed for the Sacramento Show (Moonlight Classic) on Saturday, June 24. What the WHAT? I hope this is a mistake - there are going to be MANY disappointed people, as both corps have many members and alumni from the greater Sacramento area. The only listed groups are Academy, Blue Knights, Golden Empire, Mandarins, Pacific Crest, and Phantom. Why aren't BD or SCV (or BDB, BDC, or Vanguard cadets) performing?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
  15. Ten corps tonight, on the following schedule (MDT): 7:30 p.m. Thunder 7:47 p.m. Battalion 8:04 p.m. Columbians 8:21 p.m. Golden Empire 8:38 p.m. Gold 8:55 p.m. intermission 9:15 p.m. Cascades 9:32 p.m. Oregon Crusaders 9:49 p.m. Santa Clara Vanguard 10:06 p.m. Blue Devils 10:23 p.m. Blue Knights NWS says weather will be mostly clear, with temperatures dropping from about 88F to 78F over the course of the show. If you're there, please let us know about it!
  16. What an incredible show! Huge crowd, every Corps put forth a good show, and the weather cooled down in the evening. A perfect summer evening! Below are my thoughts. Feel free to ask questions. The talent level and performance of ALL corps is simply unreal - if anyone thinks Drum Corps is dying, well... you clearly aren't seeing what I am seeing. Wahoo! I didn't take notes, just writing from memory, so please forgive the lack of detail. Open Class Golden Empire - Bakersfield, CA -This Open Class corps is doing great things! I'm glad they are expanding their tour this year and hope they make it to championships next year. Blue Devils C - Concord, CA -Cute, Adorable. What else can you say? Blue Devils B - Concord, CA -Drumline is insane, rest of the show was good; I enjoyed it, but a lack of "wow moments" for me. Feels like the show has limited room to grow Vanguard Cadets - Santa Clara, CA -Great show! I had them slightly ahead of BDB tonight (just checked the scores, I was right!) I think this show has a lot of room to grow World Class Corps Mandarins - Sacramento, CA -They have been on a rise the past few years and continue that trend again this year. They have never looked or sounded this good, this early ever. A very special shout-out to the guard who is MILES ahead of previous years. The corps moves a lot this year which is an improvement from last year. I really wish they would stop using original music, which it is good, I feel like using relatable music might be the hook that pushes them up a few slots. I think they were better than Pacific Crest. It will be interesting to see where this show goes this year. The Academy - Tempe, AZ -Perhaps the biggest surprise of the night. The show connects so well with the audience, I believe it will be a fan favorite all season. Not only is the show entertaining, it looks beautiful and sounds beautiful. Unchained Melody was one of the most beautiful moments of the entire night. Huge crowd reaction! Call me crazy, but I think this show might be a dark horse to make finals. Pacific Crest - Diamond Bar, CA In the past, I feel like PC's show design has held this corps back - this year, I think it is much improved. Their show is called UNION and is about how the railroad connected America. I liked it, but I don't think there is enough there to propel the corps forward this year. Madison Scouts - Madison, WI Judas! This show had a,lot of power. Madison is starting very strong this year. Some good moments, especially when the crowd gets into the familiar music from Jesus Christ Superstar. Emotional show. Big step up this year for Madison. Very strong guard! Blue Devils - Concord, CA -The other surprise of the night (for me!) was that I enjoyed BD's show! They move A LOT. The guard spins A LOT. So much talent in this corps, especially the guard and drumline. I don't mean this as any kind of a knock, but I don't know if this show has the potential to win a championship. I feel like it's missing something to make it truly special. I fell like Bluecoats and Crown will be battling with BD all season. Santa Clara Vanguard - Santa Clara, CA -I call this show Elegant Nature. Very beautiful show. I know nothing about pit, but WOW - the their feature beginning of the show is so pretty. The hornline is FANTASTIC. So beautiful. I think this show was so enjoyable to watch. Not that they went anywhere, but I feel like SCV is back! Blue Knights - Denver, CO -I love glitter, so therefore I liked this show :) They sounded beautiful. I don't want to sound crazy, but I think they might have one of the strongest horn lines in DCI. The guard was also great and their multi-colored flags were so pretty. Some of the vocal tracks seemed a little disjointed, but perhaps it will all make sense once the full show is on the field.Their show wasn't finished, so it was hard to get a firm feel for it, but wow - what a great show!
  17. A couple of tight showdowns coming to DCI Arkansas (Little Rock). 1/10th separated Crossmen and Blue Stars and 5/100th separated OC and Mandarins in the previous evening at Broken Arrow, OK. Order of performance follows. 7:00 pm Mandarins 7:17 pm Jersey Surf 7:34 pm Pacific Crest 7:51 pm Oregon Crusaders 8:08 pm Colts 8:42 pm Crossmen 8:59 pm Blue Stars 9:16 pm Blue Knights 9:33 pm Santa Clara Vanguard
  18. Surprised not to see a thread yet for this show: DCI Dallas, presented by North Texas Festival of Drums Monday, July 20, 2015 -- 7:00 p.m. CDT Wildcat Ram Stadium Lake Highland High School 9449 Church Road Dallas, Texas 75238 Corps in performance order: Open Class Guardians Genesis World Class Mandarins Troopers Colts Crossmen Blue Stars Blue Knights Santa Clara Vanguard Blue Devils Source: DCI. If anyone has details on exact performance times or judges, by all means chime in. Most recent scores have BD at 87.300, SCV at 84.825, and BK at 81.900. It's pretty unlikely any of them will change positions, but what will their scores be? Will Stars catch Xmen? Will Colts catch Troop? How will Guardians do in their final performance this year? Inspiration for subject line:
  19. Corps (in preforming order): Start Time: 7:30 PM Weather: -The Crossmen Partly Cloudy, high of 97 -The Bluecoats -Carolina Crown -The Blue Devils -Santa Clara Vanguard -Phantom Regiment -The Cadets -The Cavaliers WHO'S ALL GOING??? My Predictions: 1st: Cadets 2nd: BD 3rd: Coats 4th: Crown 5th: SCV 6th: Cavies 7th: Phantom 8th: Crossmen
  20. I am loving the treatment of Pure Imagination from SCV this year, from what I hear in a video from Stanford on Saturday. The show overall is absolutely fantastic, but I think this slower piece in the middle is just perfect. It's neat what the percussion is doing underneath with the rhythmic pulse. I can't tell what it is though-- it ALMOST sounds likes some sort of "chanting". It's cool. Soloist sounds just stunning. It's nice to see electronics used in a way that you can still hear that the musician is creating a great sound. My ONLY complaint is that I wish the full corps played the melody a little longer when they add in from the back right of the field. Would love to hear the final full chord extended a bit more. Loving SCV this summer!
  21. I am posting this topic as a notice to anyone that is planning on attending the MidCal Champions Showcase on Friday, June 19th. DCI has been slow at changing the information on their site. They have started the change but not finished it yet. http://www.dci.org/schedule/details.cfm?event=351 The original location and where it has been for a number of years is Buchanan High School in Clovis, CA. My understanding is that there is some construction going on there so the show has been moved. The new location is Washington Union High School, 6041 S Elm Ave, Fresno, CA. I am not really sure why they list it as Fresno because to me it looks like Easton which is south of Fresno off Hwy 41. I purchased my ticket months ago. When I saw what looked like a change I called DCI. They explained the change and said I would receive an email about it which I did a day or two later. My real concern was that I already have my ticket and it is top row almost center. They said that as soon as they got the seating for this stadium they would issue new tickets to people who had already purchased. So be forewarned that the show will not be held at Buchanan High School in Clovis but Washington Union High School in Fresno (Easton). 22. Action Wipes all natural wet wipes is doing a sale for the new year, 20% off with code "FEST2015" This product is really useful for members and spectators all year round, for after rehearsals or at shows. Wet wipes that use all natural ingredients and can be repurposed later on after wash, smell great and don't leave a sticky residue like most baby wipes. Wish I had these when I was marching. http://actionwipes.com/
