NeutralNovice
The hornline forms into a waving L shape form playing and marching backfield with the cymbal line marching through the form front field. The guard starts to circle "Martha" with the cymbal line entering the circle and lifting up Martha on the final note. At least that's how I remember it. Crowd loved it! That. Sounds. AWESOME. jwscv87
I understand the musical reason for ending the show this way, however, you are talking about drum corps and our audiences want the big exciting ending. It would be so much more exciting and dramatic to end on the big exciting note. If you have heard them live - you can hear and feel the confusion of the audience. They get so excited and then it just is a very very tepid level of applause and everyone is saying: "That was a weired way to end it - HUH?? Why did they do that?" It's just not the reaction you want to win over the audience and judges. I'm sure anyone who has seen it in person would agree with me. I'm pretty sure that lots of us who have seen it live do not agree with you. When SCV ended soft in 83 with Appalachian Spring and again in 84 with The Tender Land those shows were very, very well received and folks were certainly not calling for a different ending. The same is true of Garfield in 87. I saw the show in Hillsboro this year and the crowd wen nuts for SCV. The reaction is different - it builds slowly and lasts longer. It is not weird. I can't wait for Indy. I am quite certain the crowd will not react as you describe.

I get to see them next Sunday in Buffalo, and while I'm looking forward to seeing everyone, they're the corps I'm waiting to see!
TRacer
Having marched around the same time as Sue, the "down/soft" ending for '83 SCV's version of Simple Gifts was a natural progression of the regal, majestic treatment that corps gave to Copeland's music. In '84 we often sang "Simple Gifts" allcapella as we marched to the starting line, and we felt the down soft ending following the white tunic stripe over white pants, "BTTW" company front at a 45* angle in Tenderland that simply didn't stop but only got louder when the front finally came forward was a perfect contrast to the ending chorale and bow we did. I can recall several faces in the Georgia Tech audience I made eye contact with that couldn't control their emotions they were sobbing so hard. Fast forward to this year...after watching SCV in Riverside '09, my son and I were heading back to the parking lot and SCV was lined up to go on for the encore. I said to a few low brass guys, "I realize you guys are at attention, but thank you so much for the 11 solid minutes of sheer joy you gave me tonight...I've waited years for that." SCVsop08
In '84 we often sang "Simple Gifts" allcapella as we marched to the starting line They still do that today and when I marched as well, starting from the warm-up area all the way to the stadium. It was honestly the biggest hype I would get pre-show...brings back memories

the_aborigine
LOVE the new ending but when will the Capriccio Espagnol re-entry be put in? lol, from an '82 SCV alumweird, I was out for a walk today, haven't been playing attention too much but I saw a "Behind the Star" last week and you could see the classic SCV marching style is back and I was thinking about how I was lobbying Jeff Pearson last year to bring back the white bucks and a more subtle double white strip on the pants . . he gave me a funny look and sighed. skajerk
I think I'd pass out from pure joy if the stripes and white bucks came back. A 1985 moment all over again!
