oldtimedrummer
good answer The definition of gimmick is: something that grabs attention/ a new technique or device. Ok. So what does bass drummers laying on their drums, or tenors hanging upside down have to do with the Cavaliers program concept? Hence the "gimmick" label. oldtimedrummer
I would define gimmick as an effect that does *not* clearly fit in the production design. Exactly.
skywhopper
Gimmicks are the high risk design elements: People will either love them or hate them. Cavies 11 Upside down tenors? Troopers 11 Infinity chord w/ drum major salute? Cadets 11 Split uniforms? Cavies 10 "This is my rifle" segment? Cadets 10 Jeoffery? Boston 09 Apple bite sound effect? Phantom 08 Killing the drum major? Crown 07 Horse race? Cavies 06 Entire show? BD 05 Yowza yowza yowza? Cadets 00 Playing your neighbor's instrument? Cadets 83 Z-Pull? Bridgemen Entire corps? Etc.

SACMellos2010
Sorry but the effects other corps have put into their show go along with the theme... as has been said before playing upside down etc... I never thought that is cool I thought wow that is a far reach at stupid... then I thought... that belonged in our 1987 circus show with the juggler, carts, etc... and btw I hated that show and most everyone in the organization chooses to forget that year... but hey the upside down stuff would fit perfectly... And as for the Cavaliers placing so high in all captions at this point... that doesn't necessarily mean it is the best just because the judging community is giving marks. I cannot speak on percussion but from a brass perspective not even close but at least this year they are playing some cool parts in a few spots but balance, blend and approach leave a lot to be desired... of course imo. In the end no matter what any of us here think or say it will be decided by subjective scores. Edited July 13, 2011 by SACMellos2010

GREENBLUE
The last time I looked the Cavaliers show is titled XTRAORDINARY. The definition of EXTRAORDINARY is: unusual excitement or strange, deserving attention for being wonderful, excellent, strange or shocking. The Cavaliers Design team does an amazing job of picking an organic theme that has endless possibilities for growth, depth, layers and most importantly general effect. Look at Mad World and see how that show developed over the season. Sometimes titles or a particular show concept can limit to what a corps can do. Could Boston have stilt walkers in the middle of a Les Miz show? probably not:( Could The Blue Knights Drumline hang upside down and pull out neon drumsticks? probably not with a show like Folk Suites. Also the musical selections are Footprints, Jungle Tango, Nature Boy. For anyone to say that the "GIMMICKS" do not make sense in this years production, is complete absurdity. The stilts used during Footprints, hanging upside down during Jungle Tango (plenty of things hang upside down in the jungle/wild), etc...
