2012 show ideas

Recommended Posts

MAHLER!!!!!!!

Think about how much music that man wrote, there's way more than enough to construct a show from, and maybe even win. Even mixing some of this symphonies together, maybe 1,2,5, and 6?

Kasey,

Spirit played their whole 1988 program around, what I thought was a very good arrangement, of Petroushka. 1978 Phantom played excerpts from Petroushka and Le Sacre.

Good ideas because these are a couple of the greateatest compositions ever written and for my money Le Sacre is the greatest piece ever written.

Didn't Bluecoats actually perform that ballad before Cadets?

Indeed. However, I much preferred the Cadets version to the Bluecoats version. Both are good in different ways, but 05 Cadets had a gorgeous brass sound.

I would like to see Madison do a show based on the 1960's "Rat pack" (Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Sammy Davis Jr.)

Right game, but wrong ball park, pally (in my best Dean Martin voice)...

I spent most of this past Saturday driving up from downstate Illinois listening to "Live & Swingin'," a late 60's benefit show the Rat Pack did, televised as "The Frank Sinatra Spectacular" closed-circuit broadcast, and once I heard Sammy Davis, Jr. doing "My Shining Hour" (a real old-school BD barn-burner), accompanied by Count Basie's magnificent horn section, I knew I had hit on something. With "Who Can I Turn To?" as a wonderful ballad, with maybe "Get Me To The Church on Time" or "Fly Me To The Moon," with "Birth of the Blues" or "One For My Baby" as a closer.

I'm thinking 2012 Blue Devils - "Live at the Sands - June, 1963"

I'm working on the selection of tunes (and primo scotch) as we speak... :-)

I always thought Vanguard would be amazing playing music from John Adams' Death of Klinghoffer, especially the various choruses.

Also, I would like to see Mandarins explore some music from Chinese ballet like music from Raise the Red Lantern or perhaps the Butterfly Lovers.
