Now it feels like that part of the year I avoid at all costs. One thing you don't get is that They ARE playing interesting stuff. I would hate to have your tastes! Hot dog Time! Don't Choke on it! kickhaltsforlife Posted June 12, 2012 Share Posted June 12, 2012 (edited) The show isn't grabbing me yet. I'm actually not a big fan of the arranging, and I'm usually fond of his arrangements. The swing section had an awful feel. Then again... I think the only drum corps I've ever heard achieve a nice swing were BD, Crossmen, Madison.... Carol of the Bells became annoying to me. Electronic stuff I wasn't too impressed... really you can't do Carol of the Bells acoustically??? Really??? Bells? In a percussion section??? NEVER! Sorry to sound overly negative... I'm just not into the show right now. Positives, Really good early season brass sounds out of the Cadets. Pit sounds great, Guard looks to be spinning well and it seems like their work is very effective, and clean enough to where it caught my eye often and I was able to say "alright!" Well we all know the rewrites and additions will come, and so will many hours of rehearsal. So I hope the Cadets change my mind! It's gonna be hard... I'm not the biggest fan of Christmas music... and the current arrangements added almost no depth to music with zero depth to begin with. It just sounds like drumcorpsized christmas carols. Or Christmas Carols at fast tempos, with a lot of ornaments added in. HA A PUN! Granted there's not much you can really do with Carol of the Bells.... I know I couldn't do any better so what am I complaining about? Oh I still hate Christmas music... And the fact that after finals it's only going to be a couple of months until I'm forced to listen it to on the radio at work all day, I'll probably stab my ear drums out by then. Sorry Cadets... your show just might not be accesible to me. It's not you, it's me....... well I guess it is a little bit your fault. This show needs to make me a believer, and right now, I'm of the mind that Santa doesn't exist. :laughing: I am liking the frenetic energy of the closer though. Placement aside, because I am not sure how anyone will place this year, but the majority of fans will love this show. I see lots of points in the show where they have sketched the general concept and where they will add more, and I can't wait to see the drill design to that closer. chris ncsu Posted June 12, 2012 Share Posted June 12, 2012 I've listened to the preseason recording a few times now. I think it's clearly a difficult show musically. Transitions are missing. They don't fully have a grasp on the shapes of the show -- the exact moods and voices to convey every single second (but I don't expect them to yet). Hornline might be weaker than normal at this stage (not in volume, just musicianship). Taking it for the preseason state it's in -- I think its a very moody show -- sometimes fun, sometimes dramatic and a bit grave, sometimes reverent, sometimes completely celebratory; killer pit; very creative arranging; I love that the ballad's the feature; ballad and closer seem to go on forever (in a good way). Carol of the Bells in three parts is different musically and didnt sound redundant, Jingle Bells was very powerful in terms of sound, feel and energy, the Ballad was emotional and Hark was similiar to the end of last years show with the spiritual emotional good overtones. I have to say you could certainly notice horn players playing and looking around for their dots and the normal things one would expect in the pre season but with the power they had, i feel the emotional nuances will come through in the next few weeks to make the show come across and appeal to more of the critics. (disclosure, there was gnashing of teeth, feelings of dispair, anger and frustation in my household when Christmas music was announced back in the fall) but I do think this show will do very well with fans especially if there are too many cerebral shows out there. GE should be there, it sucks you into the second the show starts, no questions about it and different emotions are stroked. I was at the performance Saturday night and I agree with your assessment completely! They're playing Jingle Bells and Carol of the Bells. Granted, they're playing exceptionally difficult arrangements with lots of drum corps cliches thrown in. But still, what musician on these forums hasn't played dozens and heard hundreds of arrangements of them? I guess the bar is pretty high for me with holiday music: the arrangement has got to be pretty darn interesting and exceptional to hold my attention. "A Fresh Aire Christmas, Part Cadet" just seems like all frosting and no cake. What struck you as interesting about the music book? The swing section probably came the closest for me.
