HS marching band show controversy

Recommended Posts

But is the show a "promotion" of the Soviet revolution or a really bad choice of props that make "that" picture look like a promo for the Revolution...

This is the problem with attempting to make show concepts, whether hs marching band or drum corps, way too deep in the first place!!!!!!!

Or having a show that contains images that can be taken way too many ways.....

LOL, big mental picture of Rochester whipping Christ that only occurs for a few seconds.... Imagine that on the Internet today....

a) You really expect the audience, whether at a football game or a contest, to capture and understand that very subtle nuance?; and b) You really think that marching band/drum corps is a great place to teach academic understandings of historical aspects?

Needs to start somewhere.

While we can debate the nuances of free speech, art, or pageantry, there are really only two issues for me: 1) Show presentation as what could be considered as a 'promotion' of the 1917 Soviet Revolution which brought Joseph Stalin into power...

I saw a band do a show about the American Revolution with members of the guard dressed as British soldiers. I never thought of the possibility of the show promoting Benedict Arnold-like thoughts in impressionable minds. The British came back in 1812 and burned down the White House. Any show showing the British Union Jack then must glorify the advocacy of the destruction of the American political system. And to think they gave an Academy Award to Helen Mirren for playing the part of the leader of the nation that did more than any other to keep America from existing. I need to find a radio show to call in anonymously. Maybe I can get someone fired.

Good thing you didn't go to DCA this year.... Atlanta CV did "God Save The Queen" (OK, Freddie Mercurys Queen) and Hurrcs did a show with British Pop Music with a whole lot of Union Jacks.....

Saw the first show at the DCI Southeastern Championship. I had a local radio station on speed dial, but I decided to get a bag of chips instead.

Hope this guy doesn't get wind of our show since it contains songs that deal with kids on drugs, acid trips, death, grief, and depression:

The Who - "Baba O'Riley"

The Rolling Stones - "She's A Rainbow", "Paint It Black"

Drum Corps shouldn't be like a Hollywood movie where the good guys always win, I much prefer the truth.
