Well, when you spend half the season trying to decide what you're doing, it's difficult to acquire the licensing during preseason.

so why aren't the "rules" amended so that content licensing has to be approved by the corps prior to the start of the season ...

seems simple enough ... they certainly have to do that with musical content ...

after all, it is all about commercialization Charlie Brown.

Changes are made every year during the season before finals and that includes music selections. A good example of that is BD 2007 when they added the "Ode to Joy" ending in Winged Victory but granted that's on public domain.

Could you imagine if licensing was this intense the year Madison scrapped their entire show and rewrote a new one?

They Forgot to remove vocals from:

2005 99.150 The Zone [Dreamscapes in Four Parts with a Door] - Twisted Nerve (from Kill Bill) Amazon * Liquid * Overture to a New World (from Dancer in the Dark) Amazon * Cvalda (from Dancer in the Dark) Amazon * Vertigo Amazon * False Mirrors

2006 93.075 Volume 2: Through the Looking Glass - History Repeating * White Rabbit * Pollock Amazon * Original * Selection by the Propellerheads * I Am Your Shadow * Diaspora Dances (from Concerto for Orchestra)

2007 97.025 This I Believe. Truth, Value and the Personal Experience Called Drum Corps - Symphonic Movement * Blue Shades Amazon * Adiemus: Cantata II Amazon

2008 94.750 Pursuit of Happiness - Appalachian Spring Amazon * American Elegy * Nitro Amazon * Round 4 * Vesuvius Amazon * Apollo Unleashed Amazon

2009<----great show

2010 95.100 Toy Souldier - Procession of the Nobles Amazon * The School for Scandal - Overture Amazon * Prelude to Act II and Maypole Dances from Merry Mount Suite Amazon * Children's Dance (from Merry Mount Suite) Amazon * Dance of the Tumblers * March of the Toys from Babes in Toyland

2011 98.350 Between Angels and Demons - Angels in the Architecture * 160 BPM from Angels and Demons * Doxology * Amazing Grace * Angels in the Architecture

2012 12.25 - Carol of the Bells * Jingle Bells * Do You Hear What I Hear? * Hark! the Herald Angels Sing

Now the addition of these few shows slated for vocal removal would be grand.

If you are referring to 1976, they brought back several songs they had played in 1975, and added one from the public domain. They would have had more trouble licensing the original show.

Why ever would they do that? I don't see anyone asking for them to remove the 1st trumpet part of a section of the show. The Cadets show included the material being edited on the DVD...I wish that did not have to happen, but at least anyone who saw them live where it really matters got to see and hear the show they wanted to present.

Or have someone from the corps say it, and not use the original...maybe?

There was a question on this thread that I don't think got answered yet. Editing out the voice, also edits out ALL audio, doesn't it? Not just the voice?

This is disappointing..I thought we had learned our lesson...

The licensing process can take a long time depending on the content... so much so that you would almost have to start the process a year or more in advance to get all of the necessary licensing in place prior to the season. When you don't know exactly what direction a show is going to go, that's hard to do. Add in the fact that it's not unheard of for a corps to replace a whole song/segment during the course of the season. How do you account for that?

By getting started as far in advance as necessary to obtain the required licensing.

Evidently, the use of electronic samples has gotten out of control - in several ways. If rights to voice samples are going to have the same impact on audio and video products as music rights, then they should be subject to the same policies.

Also, DCI and the corps should look into developing an even more proactive approach to identifying these issues. Not much you can do about licensing problems when you discover them in the fall. Issues that impact audio and video need to be flagged before finals night. If they were, the Cadets could have altered their design to remove the voice segments, or recorded their own instead of copying existing soundtracks. (And what happened to fair use?)
