GUARDLING
So, DCI does not include the Blue Saints and Genesis and Racine Scouts which are corps who for various reasons support youth who are not the best of the best in the entire world yet want to be a part of DCI? is it that you want these corps to be part of DCI or you want them to have the same benefits and an even playing field as the top dogs?AND if it's the later taking away from the top to do that? Stu
is it that you want these corps to be part of DCI or you want them to have the same benefits and an even playing field as the top dogs?AND if it's the later taking away from the top to do that? Are you kidding? Blue Saints are taking away from the Blue Devils? Really? Look, while the media and public are enthralled by the NCAA Div I, the NCAA, as a governing body, supports Div II with just as much concern as they do Div I. That is what I am asking DCI, as a governing body, to emulate; nothing more.

charlie1223
So, DCI does not include the Blue Saints and Genesis and Racine Scouts which are corps who for various reasons support youth who are not the best of the best in the entire world yet want to be a part of DCI? What are you talking about? They are a part of DCI...?? Is that the answer you wanted? How does this relate to what I said? I think its safe to say that the marching members who are interested in participating in Blue Saints or Racine Scouts etc. were only interested because they saw much better corps than them performing at a higher level. Plus this sort of supports my point about a saturated drum corps market because 2 of the 3 aren't exactly "full" even by finals... and as a result they aren't exactly that impressive from an entertainment aspect. And for some reason people think adding more smaller drum corps is the solution? Edited January 3, 2014 by charlie1223
Jeff Ream
Yes, but to use the DCA example - Empire and Cabs were helped by this caption & MBI was not, which mirrors my gut reaction to these three corps. We all like GE judges & I suppose Communication judges that synch with our personal taste. Good GE and Communication is like the US Supreme Court definition of Pornography - "I know it when I see it" Empire did it all on G bugles as well, but that is a different discussion. true...however, if you look at prelims compared to finals, you see a flat MBI run as more of the culprit, because by using your logic, shouldn't Bucs have been below both Cabs and Empire? That show was not exactly a toe tapper. Entertainment is just as subjective as effect. As such, that sheet does nothing to clarify what's entertaining to the fans. Jeff Ream
Nice job with suggestions to downsize, Slingerland. I agree, the pit is one place to look at. I particularly like the idea of incorporating back an 'old style' concert number. I'd go further and say, use the time to bring everyone up front and wail away. It's one of those 'can't miss' moments that reaches everyone in the crowd. We don't get enough of that stuff anymore. For maximum effect, make it a well-known chart and don't try to 'improve' it, if you get my drift. but will kids want to do it? they've been raised on what's out there now
GUARDLING
but will kids want to do it? they've been raised on what's out there now kids are alot more demanding than we were BITD thats for sure..and have many mnay many more choices......there's the good and bad of that....but personal feelings aside on that....it's 2013 and what it is....the world Edited January 3, 2014 by GUARDLING

Just wanted to quote this first. Now you may begin walking it back. For starters, take a look at the last time the kids of Sudbury, Ontario, had a visit from these "much better corps" you speak of. Honestly, the only Sudbury kids who get to see those corps are the ones who already toured with Blue Saints.

Honestly, the only Sudbury kids who get to see those corps are the ones who already toured with Blue Saints. There is another possibility today... With the availability of drum corps on the web, you don't have to have seen them in person. I was very surprised that some freshman in the HS marching band I teach were big drum corps fans in middle school, though none had ever seen one live.
