Since Ohio State's band is frequently discussed here...

Been saying for years most of the top corps are one good "Oh ####" from going under. And that "Oh ####" could be a sexual harassment/assault suit.

And you could win defending against a lawsuit or have it dropped and still lose your ### (and corps) from the leal expenses.

If this is going on in some corps, DCI needs to get serious as we're not gaining any corps that could be lost.

I don't think the marchers in that Stanford Band know how to do marching music OR sexualized culture.

They know how to make fun of things though, and are not terribly restrained on matters that others would shy away from due to controversy or bad taste. That's where I was coming from.

It seems these days we go WAY too PC in a lot of things. It's College "pranks" that have gone on for years, traditions etc. I don't condone ANY form of sexual assault, abuse etc but the other stuff is kids being kids.

What Other stuff in there would be NOT considered sexual assault/harassment, etc?

I know what you mean.. and would agree with this assessment.

The Stanford Marching Band types do marching music the same way they run the country later.

What would be the harmless pranks? The " flying 69" on the bus? The girl asked to sit on her brother's lap and simulate an "O"? The freshmen women told to come to a midnight practice and strip down to underwear? While being watched be the director and staff? Time to get out of the Stone Age. These "pranks and traditions" should have died decades ago. You don't have to humiliate and harass people to build a team.

Can we at least all agree here that Bill Clinton would have loved to have played his saxophone in the OSU Marching Band of the last few years.

Pretty sad, but not surprising. I'm sure this is not particular to OSU. Blame it on today's entertainment industry more than anything. However, if any adult in charge is found to have 'looked away,' they need to be disciplined, if not removed.

Excuse me. Any adult? You mean the entire marching band?

Very sad to read this. For years as a college band director I was able to steer students away from this type of behavior with a strong leadership team and Kappa Kappa Psi...and obviously I taught at a Liberal Arts College where this sort of thing might be less commonplace.

OSU has a terrific reputation for hard work and excellent shows. So it's a shocker. As I read the article my first thought was that they over-reacted to "kids being kids." But as someone stated, if john knew of something and looked the other way, then he'd have to go. If he ultimately was the one to put out the "fire" then that might be seen as a plus. For band directors caught in this situation it's all a matter of "when did you know?"

I suspect he must have known at some point and perhaps did not do enough to stop it. Too bad. This is one of college football's treasured organizations (whether people agree or not, or whether they like them or not), and typically the band has had a fabulous reputation when they travel and how they act at home games. I really am quite surprised by this.

Ths has been going on for 50 years. Scapegoating the new guy for not changing a culture one year is asinine. A very poor move by the new president. Reactionary and short sighted.

Folks, that report is shocking and disturbing. It's practically pornographic. If that's what goes on in a lot of college marching bands, then I don't want any of my kids involved in it. I sure hope that is not the case. My next question is, does this stuff happen in DCI?

If you have to ask this, then you really don't want to know.
