Fan Network 2015

Recommended Posts

In previous years after the LIVE shows were broadcast, the "on demand" performances of those events were posted a few hours/days later and remained up on the FN afterwards - that didn't seem to hurt media sales.

Not the finals. The finals were viewable for a time afterward as part of the FN subscription last year because of a SCREW-UP. (I'm seeing a tendency here...)

I guess he means in a more modern sense. Spotify offers the ability to pay to get rid of ads, as do many, many apps. Ads are now associated with "freemium" products and paying for these products is typically what is required to get rid of them (edit to fix this sentence)

Using that logic, your examples aren't relevant to what he's talking about, since the products you mentioned don't offer a free option.

DCI live streaming does not offer a free option either though...

Thanks for posting that news. It does seem that DCI is going to see a large drop in streaming subscription income in 2015.

They sure won't be getting my money.

I mean, this pretty much invalidates the entire service. If I can't somehow sit and devote 3 hours time on random days for each show then I can't experience drum corps this year at all? Great freaking plan. Complete garbage.

Just went to the site for the first time in a few weeks, WTF?! Are they serious? Is this because of the failing music industry is trying to sue everyone as their ship goes down? Or just incompetence on the part of whomever is running this #####?

This thread has made me experience déjà vu atleast 5 times now.

Welcome to the "I hate DCI" topic!

The point was that after paying for a subscription (or a movie), not having to sift through a bunch of ads in order to use it, since paying for the service was supposed to replace the income from advertising. Companies that charge for service and then advertise on it are unfairly doubling-dipping, but to unscrupulous companies the lure of extra income makes fairness to customers look like an unnecessary luxury.

Yes, that seems to be the consensus opinion.

NeuLion does not use Flash for any of it's streaming. For the love of all that is holy, if you are recommending people upgrade Flash in order to solve any DCI Live! issues, please stop giving "tech support".

Perhaps you may want to reconsider. Or graciously point out where I’m wrong in what appears below.

Earlier today in post 603 on p. 61, I apologized to DCP and to you and then removed the advice about Flash in Firefox to play clips in DCI Live which I gave in posts 543, 546, 549, and 553, which you asserted was incorrect.

Recall that jwillis’ question in Post 538, p. 54 was about Firefox displaying an error message (“playback of media is not supported”) when on the FREE VIDEO tab at this webpage:

http://www.dci.org/mediaPortal/player.dbml?db_oem_id=33500&DB_OEM_ID=33500

A few hours later, I started thinking, hmm, and upon further review...

I subsequently tested your assertion that Flash was not needed to play these video clips in Firefox by uninstalling Flash on my Windows PC, and also alternatively by setting Shockwave Flash at Firefox’s Tools > Add-Ons > Plugins [on the left] to Never Activate. In either case, a free DCI Live/NeuLion video clip would not play, and this error message appeared: “Playback of this media is not supported.”

I then reversed the changes: installed Flash if uninstalled, set Shockwave Flash to Always Activate if set to Never Activate, closed and restarted Firefox, and then “NeuLion” appeared on the screen and a free clip played.

Updating may also solve the problem if an older version of Flash or Firefox is installed, but I’m not going to install out-of-date versions to see what happens; you may do so if you wish and let us know if the video clips still play.

In any event, on my PC, in Firefox, to play a NeuLion clip on DCI Live, Flash is essential. Though I didn’t test this, I believe that a relatively current version of Flash and/or Firefox may also be needed to avoid the error message. For anyone seeing the playback-not-supported error message, it’s 20 minutes of your life to check your version of Flash and Firefox, update if out-of-date, and see if the videos will play.

If you get this error message and need to check your installation and version of Flash, click this link

http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/

and look for a bouncing red cube which means Flash is installed. If you see that, also check the version of Flash you have installed, displayed there, against the current latest version available displayed there, and update it if needed.

Go here to get a newer version:

https://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/

You may need to uncheck an annoying check box selected by default that will install other software you don’t want along with Flash.

As a lawyer who has some experience in Copyright law (although not an expert by any means), I find the explanations as to why we can't have On Demand streaming this season to be bizarre. It really is not that difficult, at all, to get a license that covers both live broadcast and replays ... and for the type of content we're talking about here, it shouldn't be that expensive to get the additional rights (in fact, I would be shocked if they had to pay anything more for them at all). Without knowing anything about what is actually going on behind the scenes, it seems to me that DCI's real problem is that they are not getting very good legal advice on copyright issues. The copyright issues can get a bit complicated, but they shouldn't pose the major problem that the DCI feedback suggests. The back catalog is a different issue ... it can be solved very easily, but it will take some time and work. But with respect to this year's shows, there really is no excuse for not having all necessary rights cleared before the season starts. When I was in high school band, it was the responsibility of every school to make sure the necessary rights for the music they were performing were obtained. The state organization promulgated form license agreements that schools could use to get the clearances they needed. If DCI isn't requiring the individual corps to get the necessary clearances for their respective shows ahead of time, they have no one to blame but themselves. It should be a requirement that if you can't get the copyright clearance, you can't use the music. If they don't get a handle on this stuff, this whole organization is likely to go down in flames pretty quickly. Online content has to be a key part of DCI going forward if it is going to survive and thrive.

I just don't see how I can justify paying for only live streaming. I am not available for half the shows. I was really looking forward to seeing a preview of many of the shows this next week, but since they won't be available on demand, it doesn't look that is going to be a possibility. Add the fact that my local DCI show has been all but abandoned by the top corps and it is becoming very difficult to see myself staying invested in drum corps for very much longer. I never marched in the corps, and therefore my personal ties are not as deep as others. I find it very entertaining though, which is why I have been a fan network subscriber for several years. DCI's negligence in taking care of these issues (which have been around for years) is going to make it difficult for fans like me to stay involved.

There has not been any significant changes in the copyright laws in the last few years. The law regarding on demand streaming is exactly the same as it was last year and the year before. If I had to guess, DCI has received a few cease and desist letters from some copyright trolls. A good lawyer would take care of those pests pretty quickly, but I can see how they would freak out an organization without the appropriate legal support. I realize that DCI does not have a ton of resources, but they need to make this copyright issue a priority by hiring an experienced, competent copyright attorney to advise them and help them draft some form license agreements that will allow them to offer the services to fans that they need to offer. This isn't a new issue ... they've been trying to deal with it for years. It's also not a hard issue, though, with the right legal advice. There really is no excuse that they don't have it solved by now.
