Top 5 scoring record?

Recommended Posts

We have never seen 5 corps score 96 or higher in the same season. The closest we came was 2009 and 2014. With the amazing shows the top five have produced this year, is this the year we finally see the top 5 over 96? How about the top four corps over 97? That has never happened either. Closest we came to seeing that was 2008 when Crown took 4th with a 96.8.

What can drive top scores are the quality of the lower corps. It's only numbers, sooner or later you run out...lol

I guess you could have 4 corps with 97 or higher. You know at least 2 will be..lol

In another year, with these shows, I would say there's a chance. But we've seen a concerted effort to keep scores reasonably low at major shows this year, so I would be very surprised if that happened.

This is maybe the strongest Top 5 I've ever seen live. I just don't think the scores will reflect that because we don't want another 99.650.

Scores are being kept low at the moment. If that trend continues, Finals will be won with a 96.5 or 97. The 3rd and 4th place corps might only end up in the 95 range this year. Same with 5th place.

Just depends on how scores progress, but they have been low.

No... as a matter of fact the scores for the upper tier are lower than last year at this time, and lower than most years. Scores are on the whole, across the board, are lower than last year too.

All top 5 corps this year will be 96+. I believe there will be a 2 point spread between 5 and 1. Range 96.0 to 98.0.

There will not be a 99.65 this year, or perhaps ever again.

I agree that BD's 99.65 will stand the test of time. It's going to take a corps to have a major run 6-8 year run like BD is currently on to break it. I think we will see another 99 in the future. My money is on the Cadets to go over 99 again in the future. But 99.65, i will have great grand kids before that score goes down.

Right. There have been seven years in which four corps scored above 96: 1988, 1998, 1999, 2008, 2009, 2013, and 2014. In those years, the highest-scoring fifth-place corps were indeed:

95.675 -- Carolina Crown "Out of This World" (2014)

95.650 -- Santa Clara Vanguard "Ballet for Martha" (2009)

95.100 -- Cavaliers "Firebird Suite" (1988)

How about the top four corps over 97? That has never happened either. Closest we came to seeing that was 2008 when Crown took fourth with a 96.8

Indeed, although I'd add a caveat. There have been nine years in which three corps scored above 97: 1984, 1985, 1989, 1998, 1999, 2001, 2003, 2008, and 2009. In those years, the highest-scoring fourth-place corps were:

96.800 -- Carolina Crown "Finis" (2008)

96.400 -- Cadets "The Big Apple" (1999)

96.200 -- Cavaliers "Traditions for a New Era" (1998)

96.150 -- Cavaliers "The Great Divide" (2009)

However, in 2013, while only two corps scored above 97, two others were very close: Cadets had 96.950 with "Side X Side" and Santa Clara Vanguard had 96.850 with "Les Miserables". The latter is the highest-scoring fourth-place show ever in Finals.

The record that seems overdue is a year in which eight corps score 92. But right now your prediction does seem the most likely outcome.

Edited to correct typo in Cavs '98 score.

Good stuff!! But i believe Cavies was 96.2 in 1998. That year was interesting too cause that's also the year we came the closest to seeing three corps go over 98. BD was third with 97.7
