Popular Post BRASSO Posted June 29, 2017 Popular Post Share Posted June 29, 2017 (edited) In the mid 60's, the Eastern Massachusetts Drum Corps Circuit had a policy that marchers from other member Corps had to seek and receive the approval from the BOD of the Circuit to transfer to another member Corps within their circuit. Sometimes the transfer was approved, but oftentimes not ( depending on the circumstances). Around 1972' ish, the Boston Crusaders were brought before the board just before the season was to begin for having a marcher in their ranks from another Corps that had not secured the Board's approval to transfer from another Circuit's Corps. Boston was told by the Esmass Board that they essentially had to send that " marcher home " as he would not be allowed to march. Boston's Corps Director told the Board that Boston insisted that he not " be sent home ". The Board said " No ". The Boston Crusaders Corps Director at the time then told the Board to begin Corps resignation papers, as effectively immediately, the Boston Crusaders were officially renouncing their membership in the Eastern Mass Drum Corps circuit. Boston would NOT be sending their marcher who had worked his tail off all winter to " go home ". He was " home " Boston's Corps Director told the Board. This was a bold move for Boston, as DCI was a start up operation at the time and no guarantee to survive, and Boston really needed the appearance fees the Esmass Circuit shows provided. Boston kept that young marcher. He marched.. and today he is on Boston Crusaders BOD, and a loyal supporter of the Corps to this very day. There was a rumor that DCI felt Muchachos chose to ignore the age restrictions and tried to get away with the crime. This is why they were sent packing. In the case of Santa Clara in 1989, they did not discover the overage Brits until late in the season (might have been finals week, after quarters I think). SCV, from what I am told, did offer proof to DCI that they didn't know. I believe they showed DCI the copies of the licenses/ID they were given. So there was no disqualification, and SCV would go on to win the DCI Championship. Sadly, the rule that allows 22 year old marchers was not around until maybe in the 90s (I forget). I have never heard that Blue Devil rumor before...about the kid they supposedly kicked out before Finals, and then he snuck into the field and still marched finals. That's wild. I'm sure there are many kids over the years who have been sent packing for all kinds of things. We didn't make finals so we were eating DQ and drinking Coors to drown our sorrow while watching the legal drama play out.
