Sarcasm can also be witttingly punny. Here is an example quip from a master of wit: A woman once approached Winston Churchill at a party and stated, "Sir, if you were my husband I would poison that drink." Churchill quickly retorted, "Madam, if you were my wife I would drink it!"

Churchill quickly retorted, "Madam, if you were my wife I would drink it!" That is a well known retort and contains no pun, so I don't see the relevance. Puns are easy, wit, as illustrated above, much more difficult. A witty pun, now that is worth pundering.

But the Churchill retort bleeds sarcasm; and you stated earlier that sarcasm is a poor substitute for wit. 46 minutes ago, Bob P. said: ... wit, as illustrated above, much more difficult. Uh-oh; now you state the Churchill sarcastic quote actually illustrates wit. Doh! 46 minutes ago, Bob P. said: A witty pun, now that is worth pundering. Again, according to an earlier post of yours, you stated that one must not mistake puns for wit; thus you must believe that the pun of yours here has no wit.
