Time for DCI to cancel season?

Recommended Posts

No, there should not be an accommodation made to keep age-outs eligible for another season.

Move on.  Give the next class their fair shot.  Don't take a spot that a rookie with 3 or 4 years in him/her would contribute.

imo, the time has come for DCI to announce the cancellation of the 2020 season.  Housing issues alone would be impossible to resolve. Colleges are closing early,  and will likely go on lockdown for at least half the summer. High schools as well. Better to announce now, so that the kids have time to make other summer plans. DCI and the corps will survive, and come back strong in 2021. Our activity has weathered many storms over the decades, due largely to the amazing people involved in the drum corps world.

I agree but one thing DCI has is a bit of time. But I agree with you.  If best the case scenarios that the virus has slowed that does not mean it's back to normal.

Camps in the spring will not happen. How will corps know the show with no camps.

I think many if not all the corps have had their music books done before December. Info that I have seen about audition camps seem to point to working on music for this season, exercises and various other charts to determine a contract marching spot. While a few corps still have a few open spots, their camps which would be occurring now, would be primarily to start the drill portion of their show. I think all of the corps are farther along than we perceive them to be.

DCI could offer to apply the tuiton dues to the 2021 season. Age outs should defintely be given the option to march in 2021.  If we all stick together, and step up donations over the next year, we will survive.

Except it's not DCI that collects that money, and I can guarantee that not a single drum corps is going to follow a mandate from DCI to make such an accommodation.

I know several drum corps directors who would thumb their nose (or flash another digit) at Dan A if he tries to tell them what to do with their income and balance sheet.

It's time to accept the reality of the inevitable; the transmission of the virus will continue for a while.

What could a corps director do if a staff member or performer tests positive while on tour?   They'd have to quarantine everyone for 2 weeks.

WGI has already to agreed to give age-outs another season.  DCI should do the same.

I agree that the 2021 will be strong; can you imagine how competitive the season will be with this much time to prepare?

Agreed, and I have to assume the eligibility extension will only be for those that have a contract with a corps for 2020 and for the corps that were under contract. I know some others here have been critical about it  That said, these are extraordinary times and the talent pool expands for the other non contending corps, thus making it more competitive. Also the NCAA has offered the same as well as WGI. It will happen whether you like it or not.

While it sucks, we are not the only ones missing out, ask anyone who loves college basketball, it will be better in the long run for all involved.

Please tell those directors not to touch their faces.

Is it really "Time for DCI to cancel season"?

It's far too early yet as evidenced over the weekend by annoucements made by California's governor as California attempts to get ahead of the situation. Some populations previously impacted seem to now be on the decline. There simply is not enough information known yet and only more time will tell the story.

I would hope that the corps could still have some type of season if it were only standstill music shows such as the "Fleetwood Recordings from the 1960's - An Evening With The Corps."

We all enjoy and miss the activity and no matter what the outcome, I believe the activity will make a comeback because there are just too many people who enjoy the activity and performances.

Look at how many people have grown up and gone through the corps. I read an article once prepared by a parent/writer from the Santa Clara Vanguard in the 1970's and she referenced then that over 2500 players had gone through their organization.

We simply have to be patient and see what the outcome will be.

You may want to read what  the Los Angeles just posted about mandatory "shelter in place" in 6 counties.

As of today/tomorrow New York,NJ,and Conn. are closing all restaurants and bars, except for take out and delivery.

Atlantic City casinos are shutting down,as are all NJ schools.

Things are getting more restrictive, not less.

The worst thing is,the restrictions/closures are "open ended".

That makes the hope of finding housing even more tenuous.

I also don't know how well "standstill " tickets will sell.

Given everything that's going on,it doesn't seem fair to keep MM in limbo, when it appears more likely then not that a 2020 season isn't practical.
