Test market for new "old" concept

Recommended Posts

California has a number of Open class corps. DCI has sanctioned all shows there now, but what if....

The Open Class corps joined to create a Golden State Drum Corps circuit. Perhaps shows could allow other pageantry groups opportunities to perform, including mini-corps or soundsport groups. This would be controlled by the corps, not by DCI.

Has the ship sailed on this type of locally-controlled organization, or have national circumstances made it more tenable for a Region-based organization? Just thinking out loud....

EDIT- Also, much of the rest of the country is in school by the middle of August. When do most schools begin classes in California?

All of the most recently operating local/regional circuits have transitioned to operating as divisions of DCI.  All but one of them made this choice voluntarily.

To have a local/regional circuit, you will need a pack of corps who want that badly enough to run it themselves.  With the possible exception of the Pacific Northwest, there is no such situation right now.

They do have DCI scheduling three consecutive shows in June that basically serve as the California open class prelims/semis/finals. Even did a full retreat at the end of the last one.

They seemed fairly well attended if I recall.

Gold was the only one to continue on.

Of course. No one got paid by DCI for appearing cause open class.  Unlike if they banded together and did the shows themselves.

The matra has always been "DCI is the corps".

I think you would be better trying to get DCI to plan later season shows for the Open class corps that don't want/can't afford to in a specific year to travel to Indy. I actually don't see that as a bad thing and think it would be good for both DCI and the Open Class corps to explore that option.

There is a Pacific Division within DCI and they meet at the Januals to discuss issues affecting the West Coast corps.   If an open class corps runs their own show once they meet the show contract minimum requested by DCI  they keep all of the money.  For the last several years if  you want to run an open class show DCI has been offering favorable contract.  The idea the Open Class never get money is false.

Well that's cool! Thanks for the info!

In DCM most of the local shows we attended seemed to be associated with some other local festival - Momence IL Gladiolus Festival is one that comes to mind.   I know there were others but don’t remember specifics.   Part of the festival was a parade & ‘come see the Drum Corps show’ advertisement
