sarnia sam
I'm shocked that no one from Blue Devils has put out there the signature piece:1986 Channel One Suite- 1976 and 1977 were very, very good, but this is the definitive version. No one else can touch this piece because of how the Blue Devils defined the performance of it. I would also say that 1976 Blue Devils is the definitive version of Legend of the One-Eyed Sailor. 1992 Blue Devils is the definitive version of When a Man Loves a Woman. If you go back to 71 De La Salle Oaklands, you'll unmistakeably hear what Devils did with Channel One in 76, except for the drum parts. Jazzycat1
Children of Sanchez - North Star 79. By far the best of a late 70's, early 80's standard I completely agree!! North Star laid down a solid, entertaining show that year.
Jazzycat1
Oh, let's see:West Side Story - Garfield Cadets 1984 (another true classic that will never die), with honorable mention to the Sky Ryders 1987 Garfield's was good but the Sky Ryders did a much, much better job with it. IllianaLancerContra
Echano - Garfield 77 (OBTW - this whole show absolutly rocks. Us old-timers should band together and vote this show into the next Classic Countdown)
GMichael1230
You liked 82 better than 83? interesting. I loved 83 also, but to me the effect 82 gave me with the "wedge" drill (one of the first ever) I still remember how I felt listening to the 82 version and telling myself that this is going to be a corps to be reckoned with. ~G~
dckid80
Got to agree that Suncoast did a stronger version of Adventures in Time. My vote for Greatest Love of All goes to '81 27th Lancers. Mayeb one of the sweetest and purest sop solos in the history of the activity.
84BDsop
Bah! I'll see your Madison '81 and raise you a Blue Devils '84 playing La Fiesta. THAT was the best park and blow ever. #### ####### STRAIGHT, BRO!!!!
ironlips
Illiana, Thanks for the props on '77 Garfield. I'm gratified that someone still remembers that show, and would mention it in this thread alongside some truly definitive performances of wonderful corps music. Permit me to drop the '65 Royal Airs into this mix with Herbie Hancock's "Watermelon Man", arranged by Truman Crawford.
Lance
I have a hard time trying to figure out the definitive performance of Ginastera's Danza Finale from Malambo. I think it's GOT to be '79 Phantom, though I prefer their '93 version. And BD's version was really a spin-off of the original anyway. caviepit85
Really? 85 Cavaliers... I must admit I haven't seen this show, but I think 95 is about as good as it can get. What, for you, made 85 better? Cause I marched it!!! :P But I agree; 95 kills the 85 version... :)
