Spielberg to remake West Side Story

His horrible War of the Worlds remake (2005) was a bad copy of Independence Day which was a stinko copy of the terrific 1953 WOTW.

Spielberg's War of the Worlds was good. Also, I would say, more faithful to the original novel than the 1953 version was.

He could do something very controversial (easily). With today's DAILY debates on people coming into the country, people in minorities, religious differences, gender, sexual accusations, political division, etc etc. WSS can have a very different flair from original YET send the same kind of message. The TV show In Living Color had a "Crown Heights Story" skit in 1991 in which the two gangs were African American and Jewish, with Kim Wayans and Jim Carrey as the leads.

"They bring uzis, we bring Alan Dershowitz."

WSS was originally going to be ESS, with the story taking place on the lower East Side between Irish Catholic and Jewish families.

There was a 1990s documentary titled East Side Story; its subject was musicals produced in Russia and its Iron Curtain satellite states.

You left out Madonna as “Evita”.

Worst transition from stage to screen: Sofia Loren as Dulcinea.

How about a mixed language version. To be realistic, The Sharks probably spoke Puerto Rican street-jargon when they were taking among themselves; only spoke street English when talking to The Jets.
America could be split between Spanish and English as the two sides (males/females) are going back and forth - certainly would add to the Spanish/American conflicts.

Just a thought.

Will you be auditioning for the roles of Doc, LT. Schrank,  Officer Krupke, or Glad Hand?  You don't need to dance or sing for any of those roles.
