  2. Just got off the phone with a customer service rep and he said there is nothing they can do. I asked why we were not informed of this months ago and he said it was only small changes to the show and they didnt think it was important to post. This just pisses me off.

  3. DCP is all about having an opinion and expressing it. You are free to be as rude or floral as you want. However, I will again suggest that if you think that your description above reflects a BD show (any BD show).....then you must be looking through a glass darkly.

  4. Hello all, I've written a new piece for percussion just published by Tapspace. It's a classical multiple percussion piece, but it's written with drum corps bass drumming in mind. I think you'll enjoy it! Here's a link to the piece. And here's a link to the piece itself on Tapspace. http://www.tapspace.com/Eight-on-3-and-Nine-on-2-pr-181.html Please check it out!

  5. Now that Crown has become one of the powerhouse corps of DCI. 2007 was kind of the first year Crown started showing it's stuff in my mind. Then 2009 they really blew DCI out of the water with it's new innovations in the activity. Now that the climb has basically ended, are Scouts going to be the next corps that climbs out of the nethers of lower finals to rejoin the power corps?

  6. Too funny. They didn't change the fan network till the very last minute... Keep us calm and keep those orders coming in. I feel played...

  7. Oh for freak sake! OK listen up 'powers that be' - PRESHOWS ARE IMPORTANT TO US. Them not being judged doesn't matter one little bit to us. We LOVE them. OK?

  8. Maybe not an entire show being awful, but i'm sure DCP would admit there have been awful moments. NOT directed at BD. Kind of just an overarching statement of the history of DCI.

  10. I've seen a few groups allowing their tenor players to use the stands for when they are just standing in the lot but have the snares and basses still using the carriers. I find this a very respectable median to using stands or carriers because I know that tenor players backs get truly screwed up the more they carry them.

  11. Is it the staff that decides a winning show or the kids that show up? I feel like some corps (not to pick on BD but they win a lot), it seems like the fact that they have some of the big names in corps make the show a winner. Like 2010, the show was crazy good and clean, though lacking in comprehension to the fans, but did the kids make it? No the staff wrote a show that was all challenging and wierd. Like people tell kids that their show made no sense. But is that always the kids fault?

  13. Honestly I will admit my lack of knowledge. I didn't know the song This House is not a Home until my gf told me during finals. At first I hate BD because I didn't get it, now that i know the song, the opener was a favorite of mine. Tenor break for blue stars. Phantom's whole show. Cadets winning. Crown's paint it black. And my girlfriend experiencing her first ever finals.

  14. Well it was an epic free day in Cedarburg, Wisconsin 2009. Lets just say there was duct tape and a massive brawl at 4 in the morning that night. 2009 scouts may remember waking up but only a few remember what truly happened. Great memory with those guys.

  15. Ahem. Glee had done it awhile before scouts brought that out. Had listened to it a few times actually. People had heard of it and knew about it. If you mean that people had never heard a brass arangement of it then ya i agree I've never heard that version.

  16. I had heard that there was some talent leakage before the line had fully been set. But as awesome as ESOM was at the end of the show you have to admit it's hard to write tough music to that. They'll do very well. But selfishly I'm hoping that no Crown guys go to scouts :P

  18. After watching the indoor percussion activity for several years I am of the opinion it is time for some changes at the top. The activity seems to be going away from the best playing group winning and towards the ones with the most props and artistic development scoring the best. Mark Thurston was a great instructor in his time but I am afraid the goals are being changed. I really don't know who Andy Sanders, Jimmy Haskell or Caleb are. Perhaps time to bring some more of the early people back such as Ward Durrett, Rick Brown and others I am not sure there is a place for early stage groups to be involved any more and the farther you move from playing to props the more it becomes the one with the most money wins. Last year the overall amount of groups attending shows declined. Likely because of the economy and money.

  19. Just saw this on Facebook...DCP member Jon Waggoner (jwscv87) passed away today...looks like a heart attack. 45 years old...far FAR too young. Jon was an alum of the Black Watch (81-82), Longview Mauraders (83-84), and the Santa Clara Vanguard (85-87, 04 TOR parade) Jon and I had some fun discussions over the years about who lost DCI by a closer margin to Garfield. We never COULD come to an agreement on who's caption breakdowns were closer...and it was rendered moot in 08. He was intelligent, respectful, easy to communicate with, and I am glad to have called him an on-line friend for these years. He leaves behind a wife and 2 children. My condolences go out to his family and fellow alums. RIP, Jon. Say hello to Gail for us.

  20. NOT good...it took them until the finished product commenced shipping to realize there were copyright problems? At least with ESOM we knew from the start that the potential was there for a problem, and a solution was arrived at so that at least we had the audio...DCI must be using the same PR organization as some political candidates and college sports teams.

  23. I agree... it should have its own thread - but the thread should be on the DCI boards... not DCA... Cascades/NWYM clearly calls the corps Cascades B corps. They would appear to be following the blue devil/scv method.... FANTASTIC idea... I wish them the best... fantastic drum corps people...

  26. This sort of goes to everyone. Is maimed close enough? Or do they have to really die? Like can they just like break their leg at the end or does it have to be a blade of some sort going through their chest?

  28. I'm guessing it's the difference between digital download and physical CD. (And I agree, especially with as rabid a fanbase as DCI generates, it might behoove them to actually list which corps' preshows are included. Wouldn't take more than a few minutes to write a news article with the data, or just list it on the CD ordering page.) Mike

  30. Saying "high school" as a generalization isnt always accurate. Same as the assumption that all drum corps rehearse more. I taught a DCI div 3 corps for awhile and our schedule paled in comparison to the high schools ive taught. right now we run competitive Marching Band starting in mid-May, weekly rehearsals and minicamps all summer, 2 weeks of band camp, then 3 rehearsal nights per week and 2 performances (games and contests) on Fridays and saturdays and usually extended rehearsal days on Saturdays. The week after band, we start Indoor percussion 4 days per week including all days on saturdays and minicamps over holiday break. in the end, it probably equals out to a lesser operating drum corps.

  31. And for Crown's preshow, they did do a finals week standstill recording (a very good one too) - it's available for download on Crown's store website. Mike

  32. It sure would be nice if DCI would specify Clearly every modification they make to shows/pre-shows BEFORE they start accepting our money on their store web page. We were only told about Madison's closer. I understand they can't do that for pre-season orders via the fan network, but there is no excuse for the store page sales...

  33. I think Tama needs to focus 100% of their marketing to colleges and universities or parade bands. Most competitive programs really want a package deal as it brings the costs way down. ESPECIALLY on Shipping. (A lot of people dont realize how much that part costs but its EXPENSIVE) High schools arent as bound by "package deals" so many high schools, even competitive ones could get in there because they dont HAVE to match at that level, but many still prefer to. But with colleges, you sell 10-15 snare drums, 4-8 quad kits, and from 9-13 bass drums in one shot. With a few exceptions, they dont even have front ensembles. You sell a lot of equipment to a reliable entity and there is your market share! If they spend their time trying to sell to top 5 DCI, they are going to have a lot doors shut in their faces. It sounds like they have a good plan though. They have great people involved, and they didnt just wake up yesterday and start cranking out drums. They have been at this for a few years now and the product looks and sounds great. Some top notch scholastic programs have already used them and i think its a very viable product. They just have to stay patient and market themselves correctly.

  34. And how 'bout just the DVD...any word on when they will be shipped? I'm going away over Thanksgiving weekend for the sole purpose of showing this DVD to friends who did not see the corps this summer. If I don't get it by Thanksgiving...it's...well...I can't even think about it...

  36. I assume you meant Pio? If you don't know the story behind my corps movements then i understand that comment. If you do then you'd never say anything to me about what corps i march with. (PM me if you want). And I agree the shows I've marched never had extremely WOOO moments. I can proudly admit that. But don't you ever, ever disrespect where I've marched without understanding my story.

  37. Yeah, I'm in year five with the battery I bought at my school, and the drums still look pretty close to new. They're a custom finish Pearl line, and other than normal wear and tear on some of the parts, they still look great and I expect them to last for several more years. And I didn't spend nearly as much on them as I would've on the Tama drums. If you want the drums to last a long time, like Mercedes apparently, all it takes is teaching them to take care of the instruments.

  38. Now since this is blue devils did you mean the smokey smell everyone knows? (Sorry had to do that). Otherwise the music seems very interesting and I'll try to keep an open mind. Honestly I haven't read much about the whole 99% crap so i can't say stick to them or not, but i do feel that politics DO NOT have a place in DCI. That also kind of is directed at the 2010 Cavies with the somewhat subdued attack at the government and anti war. Just my thought. Don't mean to offend or drag in a political debate.

  39. Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Phantom 2009 run into problems getting copyrights for the music to the movie Red Violin and therefore had to switch to all the Paginini stuff? As well as the now known problem with Madison and ESOM? I'm just wondering any other shows have run into problems with getting the rights to perform certain pieces and why.

  40. A Mercedes is only expensive if you only keep it a few years. The thing is, they can run for hundreds of thousands of miles if you take good care of it... making it one of the cheapest cars out there over the long haul. Though no one really knows and can only guess based on quality of previous products, I suspect these things can go the distance. In that case, they are cheaper. Though... will agree they need keyboards and timpani to be able to really compete.

  45. I think a common thread among the posts about the Crossmen percussion BITD is Mark Thurston's writing. He wrote some great stuff, and found a way to incorporate some amazing grooves, without making it obvious, or seem cadence-like.

  46. Don't bring a lot of shirts. One, never wore them during rehearsal, but when I did nobody cares how it smells when you're on the field. I usually just bought a pack of hanes white tees. And you actually won't hit walmart as much as people say. Depending on the corps it's different, Pio we hit walmart a lot, like every other week, at Scouts we had maybe 2 all season in 2009. If you keep maybe 2-3 shirts that you are willing to not wear to practice and keep them as free day/post show shirts. Otherwise any shirt you wear during rehearsal WILL BE RUINED!! Trust me the crap you do will destroy tee shirts. Otherwise kinda pack for like a week of camp and you can survive off that. If you have running shorties I'd reccommend them because you can just shower in them and wash them then.

  47. I know that I prefered Phantom's drumline sound from last year, but then Scouts hornline sounded awesome (if still a little lacking in depth). What are your favorite sounding groups and sections?
    1 point
  48. I know from a fan prospective last years show didn't make much sense. Yes it was a very complex musical and visual experience. But tell me, how is drum corps going to pull people in to watch and donate to the program when your average fan, who isn't attuned to music at all, can understand the complexities of a atonal show. You can't make it so complicated people can't understand it. If you were at finals watching the crowd, the only reason they clapped at the end was because the BD staff was waving their arms and jumping around, which made us assume that the show was ending.
