  1. I predict that my son marching with The Cavaliers and my daughter marching with SCV are going to have life changing summers.

  2. This is the January 2014 Report for The Skyliners! We just completed our first full month of rehearsals at Sky. Attendance is ok considering we've had a lot of snow up here in Northeastern PA. Overall, we are very pleased with the corps' progress so far. The horn line has about finished the first two numbers. Percussion has the opener learned and about 1/2 of the second number. Just as a reminder - Our show "A New Dawn, A New Day" consists of "Feelin' Good", "Blue SKies", "It Ain't Necessarily So", "'Round Midnight", and we close with "Caravan". In our February rehearsals, brass will start on the next section of the show. Percussion will finish the second number and begin the next section later in the month. Along with the music, the visual staff is hard at work molding our appearance. Basics blocks take up a good portion of each rehearsal. We have lots of people from different programs. It is important that they learn one marching program - THE SKYLINERS marching program. We are also preparing for our first public appearance. We will be marching in the Scranton St. Patrick's Day Parade on March 15th. The corps is very excited about this. We've begun fitting everyone for uniforms and practicing parade music. As far as our current numbers: Brass line is in the mid-20's. We'd like to fill that out more especially in the baritone line. Of course, soprano and mellophone players are very welcome. We have 8 contras - a beautiful, deep sound to build from. Battery Percussion - Battery is currently at 4 snares, 2 tenors, 5 bass, 3 cymbals. Pit Percussion is doing very well. We are at 12-14 players there. Color Guard is currently at 16. Everyone is working very hard. As a Director, I can't be more thankful for the great staff we have. More importantly, the members are really excited about building this corps again. They all love being SKYLINERS! Openings are available is all sections. People are asking, "what is your goal, Class A or Open?". My answer is that The Skyliners will be competing this year. No matter what class is chosen, it doesn't matter. We will do the best we can in whatever class we end up in. The goal is to have the corps back on the field. Period. I've attached a video of our January camp. Enjoy! If you have any questions, my email address is Larry@skylinersdbc.org. http://youtu.be/KEsN8abnn2U Our next rehearsals are at Wyoming Valley West HS, 150 Wadham St., Plymouth, PA: February 1st, 10-6 for Brass and Guard. February 2nd, 12-6 for Percussion. Thanks! Larry

  3. My vote goes to the Boston Crusaders for the most improved Corps during the course of the 2013 summer season. They finished 6th out of 6 Corps on June 22nd ( behind Spirit, and more than a couple of points behind Cavaliers ) and were ranked 14th the first week on DCP Rankings. They trailed Cavs, Madison, BK, for much of the season. But they wound up 8th, just a mere tenth behind the Cavaliers at Finals for 7th. They really came on strong to finish their season well and breaking into the 90's. As for the most improved Corps year over end ( 2013 from 2012 ), that honor seems to go to The Troopers, imo. In an age when its difficult to move up more than 2 placement positions from one year to the next, The Troopers went from 18th in 2013 to 13th in 2012, and came within less than 2 tenths of shocking the Blue Stars in the Semi's and edging them for that coveted Finalist spot. Their Semi's performance was " on ", and almost became the shocker of Championship week, imo.

  4. I've only been to two DCA shows--the 2012 and 2013 finals in Annapolis--and golf claps were certainly not the order of the evening.

  5. OK... perhaps a bit of a stretch for a name clue here... But our NYC-area denizens might remember an amusement park in Bayonne, NJ, there for many years until it closed, circa 1970s... located near the Bayonne Bridge. Therein lies the clue. LOL.

  8. Those 8 basses could be the foundation of some very beautiful sounds. Hope the bari numbers work out. Keep the faith and keep us in the loop. Pulling for Sky to rebuild one of the epic franchises in the history of the activity, on a par with Madison and others. If DCA can hold onto the new breed from outside the Northeast, and rebuild the core franchises upon which the activity was built, the results could be phenomenal. The Journey of 1,000 miles begins with one long, arduous, ###-kicking rehearsal weekend. - Confucius

  9. Alas, we are to only dream about hearing some sweet arrangements of Ellington or Soundheim performed in DCI today instead of the current disjunctive hiccups driven by the philosophy, ‘it is all about the visual’ (a tribute to Guardling there).

  12. From their Facebook page: The Scouts wrapped up their January camp this afternoon, putting together more than half of the show musically and pushing themselves through some challenging visual blocks. In ensemble, the corps played through the opener "Fanfare for the New", the "Fugue" (from Passacaglia and Fugue), and "Concerto to End All Concertos" to complete the Kenton portion of the show. Congratulations to all the new Madison Scouts receiving contracts today and thanks to all the volunteers who helped out this weekend. Another great camp from our passionate instructional team! #Scouts2014

  16. The "Tube" in question, regarding our current photo subject, originated in 1982. During an era when various people used various substances to...uhhh... change their perspective on life in general, so to speak. Now... to be clear here... our photo subject was NOT one of those people partaking in such substances... that was not, and is not, his style... but his use of The Tube certainly contributed to the mayhem usually associated with such substances, and the altered sense of reality those substances can produce. It's a Sunriser "insider war story"... tough to explain, and it does not help anyone searching for clues as to our photo subject's name. To sum up: As far as "The Tube" goes... ya had to be there, folks.

  17. Thank you to our volunteers for making this past January camp a great success. A very special thank you to all of our members for taking the time, through some tough snow conditions, for getting to camp and making the first half of the show happen!! Great Work. 19. Despite the fact that it is my favorite song in drum corps, I have it on good authority that DCA has stated the next corps to play it is out.

  20. I like that C2 is playing stuff out of the "greatest hits" bucket. Heck, we have whole alumni corps appearing at DCA shows that do nothing but old stuff, so why can't a competitive corps play some updated arrangements of the parent corps' classics? C2 has done more to bring new and younger fans to DCA in the last two years than every other corps, the over all association, and it's legacy fans have...combined. Doubled. Times by 10. It seems to me they should do whatever they want...

  21. "While Soundsport is the first thing DCI has ever done for smal corps" I always thought that the A-60 class that DCI established years ago was done for the small Corps...

  22. North Star perhaps ? They were a beloved Corps that came onto the scene, were very innovative, entertaining as all heck with their brass, went thru multiple uniform designs, but unfortunately are no longer with us. Both the North Star and the Star of Indiana were terrific Corps that regretably are no longer found competing at Finals Nite anymore and that many fans of both these Corps really miss to this very day.

  24. I must admit to being impressed by the appearance of this eloquent turn of the phrase on this forum: "...that would just be insane schadenfreude..." And that really is the point. Perhaps a "real world" anecdote would add perspective. A while back, I heard Rita Moreno sing with a trio at a local caberet. She appeared for 3 nights, two sets per evening, all of them recorded. I attended "finals". At the performance in question , she began by saying, "I have a bit of a throat on this evening and may miss a note or two. It won't bother me. Don't let it bother you." She did have one little unintentional crack. When the recording was released, it wasn't there, and that is as it should be. It was an anomaly, not truly representative of Rita Moreno as an artist. Those of us who witnessed the actual event will just have to store her miss in the audio of memory. One wonders how many versions, revisions and edits exist of the Mona Lisa, Sunday in the Park, Finnegan's Wake, the Gospels of Matthew, War and Peace, and Saturday Night Live. If you were there, you witnessed the event. A recording will never be able to replicate that. Reverb, compression, ambience, fades, equalization, sampling rate and a host of other technical travesties must be visited on any other mass-consumed mechanical version. It's just a ghost of the actual happening, an impression, an "editorial", like any other historical document. It reflects someone's POV. And that, my learned colleagues, as Mr.Sondheim wrote, is the art of making art..."Putting it Together".

  25. The ADHD camera work was also annoying. Is it too much to ask them to focus for just a couple of seconds without having to move the camera? I love their arrangement of "Carol of the Bells."

  26. Nick cannon called them a band then sent the intro to duggie houser who properly introduced them as DCI champs and referred to them as a Carolina crown drum and bugle corps. There were close ups good sound and probably 30 seconds of uninterrupted music. The only group that didn't sound like they were being dubbed over by a recording.
