  1. Disagree with the op. No one is obligated to cheer /give a standing o out of politeness. I cheer for performances that move me. Rather than calling those who don’t cheer rude maybe reflect on why they aren’t cheering. I know a fair number of folks who respect the skill of BD members but who don’t click with BD’s shows. I’m one of them. I evidently don’t have a lot of shared aesthetic sensibilities with BD’s design staff. They obviously click with a lot of folks so good for them. But when I don’t clap it’s not out of disrespect or sour grapes it’s because I’m not moved
  2. Bluecoats 22 sound guy. Discussion of brass amplification at 2:23
  3. No idea. It just seemed disjointed and not well connected to what comes before it
  4. Hey it sounds like the brass line is having a true old school experience this summer. Get out and push!
  5. Gonna give this thread a little bump because I’m digging the Colts this year too. Just a straight up entertaining show. I have a second reason for posting. I have 4 tickets to the Olathe show on Monday (VIP section with parking) that I can’t use because I’m getting over COVID. Would love to see someone use these. I live in KC MO but would be willing to drive a bit to meet for an exchange. PM me if interested. I’ll also post on the Brass Impact thread when that goes up.
  6. Was that a random pa test tone in the mix at the end of the closer or is my phone making noises?
  7. Great thread. GE has always been a mystery to me yet it is such a big determinant of scores. Of the responses so far, this one makes the most sense to me. Given this definition I think GE judges should be required to "sample" audience reactions (literally look at the faces of audience members at multiple points throughout the show). 😉
  8. lol, saw the thread title and the date of the original post and was certain I must have posted on this thread in the past. But no. I'm right there with you OP. I love drum corps from all eras, but there's something about that show that gets to me. Literally get teary every time I listen to it. To top it off, one my favorite live show memories of all times was from that show. Crossmen beat SCV that year I believe for the first time in Xmen's history. Out of respect, they turned to SCV and played their retreat song. As if this wasn't nostalgia enough, I dig the references to Fan Network in the original post. 😃
  9. One of my favorite memories of all time was when SCV played their retreat song. Instead of playing towards the stands, they turned and played to the Crossmen who had beaten them. Crossmen went nuts. Total class. And it made me realize what a brotherhood/sisterhood drum corps is.
  10. I noticed at the Madison show this Saturday that the announcer repeatedly mentioned the Fan Network. I suspect that DCI provides boilerplate text to be read as announcements at shows. I think the text needs to be updated. I'm no business genious but directing people to a service that is unavailable, seems suboptimal.
  11. Yeah, that's the tricky thing about issues like this. My guess is that most fair minded folks believe that the views and freedom of racial minorities, LGBT folks, and members of various religions should *all* be respected. As you know, that's a very "Millsian" idea. The challenge arises when, as with this situation, worldviews, cultural practices, etc. of different groups come into conflict. Given such complexity, I do *understand* why DCI tried hard to not offend anyone in their statement. But I don't have to like it. :-)
  12. I was relating Mill's ideas to some of the discussion in this thread, not the broader issue. I saw multiple posts on this thread where readers appeared to try to minimize the importance of the views of folks who might be affected by the law, particularly LGBT folks, because such folks were small in number. Mill's ideas in that passage deal directly with the idea that's important not to minimize the importance of the views of folks in the minority just because they are few in number. Let me be clear. I agree with Mills on this point. Others may not. Good thing we live in a democracy eh? My point about DCI was a completely separate point and was, as I tried to indicate a big, fat opinion.
  13. Nice summary Brasso To those who are essentially suggesting to people in groups who aren't in the majority to essentially "deal with it", I humbly suggest you read some history and political philosophy. In what way does it seem right or make sense that those who are numeric minorities shouldn't have a voice in a democracy? John Stuart Mills' thoughts on the Tyranny of the Majority in his classic essay on liberty is a nice start IMHO: http://www.serendipity.li/jsmill/jsmill.htm IMO, DCI's response was tepid and political. IMO Madison's response was clear, appropriate and corageous. Kudos to the mods for keeping this thread open and kudos to contributors to largely keeping the conversation civil.
  14. re: Star 91, IMO, I don't think they would beat Cadets or BD 2014. Star 91 brass, heck yeah. But the drill didn't place the same level of demand *throughout the show* as the drill of today's top corpsIMO. Of course there are segments of that show that placed tremendous musical and marching demands on performer like the part around 4:40. IMO, Star 91's drill also wasn't as clean as Cadets and BD are likely to be by finals (see rotating square at about 1:20). Star 91 percussion compared to the top lines in 2014 = no comparison IMO (with current lines coming out on top). No doubt Star 91 was an amazing design and performance. *edited to read more like English
  15. I don't think anyone's compared decibel readings from back in the day and today. It's all pretty subjective. I sat low and on the 50 at two shows this year and my ears were ringing afterward.
  16. Yes. I'll even go a couple decades further back. I'm a fan of pre-1980s drum corps, and marched in the 70s, and absolutely love what Crown is doing this year and have loved their artistic trajectory since 2007. I feel confident in saying that Fred Windish and I are not the only dinos who appreciate modern drum corps (not trying to pick on you Fred but you listed your age ). I'm not trying to argue you out of your misgivings about modern drum corps. Sorry to hear that Crown and recent changes in the activity aren't your cup of tea. But as a practical matter, I don't think the activity is going to go back to an earlier time. It never has - as you might be aware, one of the main reasons DCI was founded in the first place is because drum corps directors wanted more creative freedom. Tis' the nature of the activity I'm afraid. Personally, I appreciate and enjoy the constant change and evolution.
  17. Just saw this show for the first time on FN. Beautiful music, nice visual package. Found the combination of the narration, pictures & music quite moving. Hard to put into words, but I just love the vibe BK puts out year after year. This year's no exception. Can't wait to see this live.
