God bless you John... and Liz is rolling on the floor laughing right now... what she's telling you is it's:

wick

as in kimmelwick rolls

Thanks Tom ... and Liz too.

However, after sampling a couple of these tasty delicacies between sheets of rain from Ernesto, I returned home and did a bit of research on the sandwich - in the hopes of finding a source closer to home ... or a recipe for making it myself. Sadly, neither worked-out.

So - I'm happy to share some of that info and suggest that you check your facts with the following:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beef_on_weck_sandwich

http://www.kitchenproject.com/history/BeefOnWeck/index.htm

http://www.nyfolklore.org/pubs/voic29-1-2/buffalo.html

http://whatscookingamerica.net/History/San.../BeefOnWeck.htm

I'll point-out, with all due respect, the following from the last article: "Also called Beef On Wick, an alternative spelling usually used by older people from Buffalo and eastern suburbanites. "

Now - as for it being associated with Buffalo or Batavia or Rochester .... to us guys from Southern California - its all the same to us - "Western New York State". I've only had Beef on Weck in Rochester - so that's where I associate it with.

Whatever you wish to call it ... "Wick" or "Weck" ... its still a great sandwich ... and I'll be enjoying a couple while in Rochester.

The awful thing about Ernesto wasn't the rain itself so much, it was that it was so ^%%# COLD!!

87 had heavy rain, but I wasn't freezing on the field.

Completely agree. Prelims that year was the worst show of my life. I didn't play an entire note during the show because I couldn't move my fingers to use the valves I was so cold.

A friend who was in the stands in 2006 said that it physically hurt to be sitting out in that.

guess I should have googled first... indeed it's kimmelweck

never heard weck before - just wick

forgive me mighty John... I owe you a Red Osier's sandwich

actually - if you REALLY want a treat... go out to the Red Osier restaurant - it is 5 STAR with the best prime rib anywhere... but it's a bit of a drive in LeRoy

I live in the Eastern Suburbs and have never heard it called Wick while living here or my entire life in WNY (which technically doesn't include Rochester). Though maybe that is what it sounds like with a Cheektowaga Polish accent.

Still need to get John to Charlie the Butcher or Schwabl's :)

Oh man... that wind, blowing straight through that open level, all day and night. Yikes.
