Bluecoats 2013

Recommended Posts

I'm with you when you say that this is a bear of a piece (especially movement 5), but the above comment may be underestimating Crown's brass book from last year a bit. Regardless, it will be difficult, and I'm looking forward to hearing it in their show.

I'm not underestimating Crown's book last year at all. I'm stating that this show (if played as written) would probably be harder.

Like I mentioned above, I do think this piece is really tough. However, Bertrand Moren's "Dreams" is one of the most difficult pieces I have ever seen/heard (and I have seen/heard a lot) - including this piece. There is a reason that there aren't a lot of recordings available for "Dreams" :)

Don't forget too that this is only one piece from the source material for Bluecoats show (unless of course they will be doing their whole show based on this, which would be very cool indeed). I'm interested in seeing whether the rest of their brass book will be as difficult as this piece is.

It was when the 27th Lancers played it in 69/70, back when it was new. Not sure about how successful it would be today.

I thought it was really well done when the Crossmen used it for their opening statement. I don't know if it would work as a full tune, but for the 60-90 seconds up to the big hit, it was good.

What does dissonant mean to you? I'm asking the question because I realize some people have different definitions of dissonance.

Well...here is a definition,

dis·so·nant adj.

1. Harsh and inharmonious in sound; discordant.

A couple of drum corps examples IMO are,

Bluecoats 2010 Most of closer (especially beginning of closer)

Bluecoats 2012 Most of closer (especially 10 - 10:34)

Blue Devils 2010 Most of closer

Sorry to get nerdy here, but even within that definition there is a lot of ambiguity. What exactly is considered harsh or inharmonious? Back in the days of early counterpoint literally everything we listen to now would be considered harsh. Nowadays, one person's minor second is another person's perfect fourth. Its all relative. That's kind of the point of the conversation, and frankly one of the strengths of drum corps programming. There's something for nearly everyone. Now if someone can't handle anything other than major chords, they're probably going to hear things they don't like in a drum corps show. But they probably also can't go to the movies, or the symphony, or a ballet etc.

At the end of the day, there are as many different preference in programming as there are fans. Not every show is going to please every fan, but there are enough different design choices being put on the field that the vast majority of fans should be able to find something they like.

"...To Look for America"

Interesting. More Simon and Garfunkel?

As odd as this may sound, I actually feel a lot better about this show now that I've seen the video.

Some of the imagery in that video would also suit the Crossmen 2013 show.

(Edit: it's also interesting that two 2013 shows, Bluecoats and Mandarins, feature "America" in the title.)

Will the Bluecoats guard wear gabardine suits with bowties?
