If BD Wins, We Riot!

Recommended Posts

You can perceive anything you want Jeff. People end marriages every day as a result of perceptions. People are fired as a result of perceptions. But many tiimes, those perceptions are wrong. I have no idea why BD designs the way they do, but it interests them and it's very beautifully done....and obviously effective. Just because you and others don't like their designs, doesn't mean that you get to shut them down and ram your opinion down our throats. They are 1 of 22 corps competing....why not just let them be different and be happy they are working hard to touch the non-traditional elements of design. I know you Granny and others would love to see them do their old Jazz shows with screamers and long grooves.....they're not....maybe some day...but not now. So try to appreciate what they are doing, wait for CC or Cadets or SCV or BK to touch your Drum Corps buttons...let it be.

Jeff makes a reasonable argument and you go into some weird stuff about perceptions and sappy sentimentalism. Why don't you try actually responding to the point he's making?

Nor did you answer honestly if you would be this upset if BD was placing 5th or 6th. Because that (IMO) is what this is all about! Period!

Would you like these shows from BD if they place 5th or 6th, Plan (putting your band parent thing aside)?

I doubt it, you’d be screaming for change

A few things that bug me about this, some say it’s because it’s new and we are old that we don’t get it or like it. Well I am old and I don't like it but not because it's new. I have been around so I know the drill and I see the short cuts they are taking with the drill and if baffling as to why it’s being rewarded so well. Maybe the people that like the visual so much haven’t been around enough to understand the written drill cheats? It’s much more difficult, impressive, entertaining to me to get 10 people to do the same thing in unison than it is to get 10 people to do 10 different things sort-of together. I mean I can throw a riffle and not catch it too…and that same sort of thing is all over their visual. I don’t mind the music, enjoy it actually but I feel if Blue Knights did the same show at the same visual level, they’d still be getting Blue Knight Visual scores – I feel the BD staff is getting the numbers for their names mostly. I wish we could come up with a system that didn’t put so much of the score in the designers hands, I get it but I don’t like it….anyone really think Cavies talent level went from third to eighth or Regiment from first to 9th in one year? That's why this feels so stale

Garfield's massive project of showing the corps finances pretty much has SCV (I believe)as the corps with the most money. If this is correct, shouldn't they be winning finals more often?

Or maybe Star should still be winning; Bill Cook probably had enough money to take out a 30 year lease on the trophy.

Ppfft... This makes me laugh.

I'm not needed to defend Plan but, based on what I know about him, sensitivity is not one of the words tatooed on his bicep. Much less over-sensitivity.

Now, he IS just a big teddy bear, but...

Not sensitive in the way I am when one of my darling grandchildren give me a handmade mother's day card saying she hopes I live another year, but sensitive in the way that Napolean gets when Uncle Rico throws Kip's steak and hits him the face.

I was just as supportive and pleased when the youngin' was in BAC....fighting to get past BK in 2007.....that bottom of the finals competitive group was where we lived and the top five was utterly out of our view. That's the way it is in parents/supporters world....proximity. And we were just as into it as we were in the BD years. No different. And honestly, I learned more about DCI competition and managing disappointment from my kid at finals 2008 than I could ever from anyone on these boards. It was a remarkable experience.

I'm having a hard time figuring out what three letter word the mod's would not allow. Bag of ice? Bag of tea?

"Bag of DNC" or" bag of RNC" or calling Nancy Whatshernsame or Sarah Whatchamacallit " a bag " probably would draw you at 5 yard penalty for being offsides. (Or 15 yard penalty and loss of down for Unsportsmenlike Behavior. )

The difference is you're pretending that BD is the SOURCE for all of it, when in fact, they're just part of the evolution of effective prop usage that goes back decades. Whether it was "one-off" for a corps as you say or not is irrelevant...when a corps uses them and does so effectively, it then becomes part of the drum corps design paradigm of "tools in the box."

That's a little twist on what I said. Never said that they can't use them.

Just noting that MOST of the top corps started using them this year en masse; also I feel that it was influenced by BD's winning design.

If you can not "see it", then that's not my fault really...

Let me guess: "Honey, just continue to repeat these simple letters: FYWW, FYWW", right Plan?

:tongue:/>

(Heh, I keed, I keed. I know what you mean and can relate. I've got one of those kids, too).
