Since Ohio State's band is frequently discussed here...

Why do I think Stanford's band will do a show about this incident this fall?

I have a feeling they may march their first show in underwear...

as I posted on page 2:

porn? yes

alcohol? yes

rookie talent night? yes

giving nicknames? yes

running around in underwear? yes (and basically all rehearsals)

running around naked? yes (naked run throughs?)

sing songs? yes

changing on the bus with members of the opposite sex? duh.

so... my answer is yes.

edit: this is without mentioning instructor / student "relationships" and overage / underage sexual happenings that we all like to bury our heads in the sand about.

If true, then wherever this sort of thing is taking place they'd better begin to clean-up their act. Drum corps is such a niche market that it simply wouldn't make news or big waves if one of them got busted for this sort of thing. And a drum corps is not an educational institution, although they do provide an education.

Ohio State, whether people like them or not, is THE MOST popular marching band in the country. Note, I didn't say best. They are certainly very good, every year. And some years they are extraordinary. But there is no doubt that their popularity nation wide is high. So it's making national news that they got busted (by their own school) for these infractions. Good Morning America covered it yesterday. That would not happen with drum corps. The new director at Ohio State will have to clean house of certain students who allowed this behavior to continue, and they will move on. In the long run they will be fine because they are supported by a large school and donors with major cash.

DCI, however, if it had to withstand the same allegations, could be crippled permanently. No, it wouldn't make national news the way Ohio State does, but the effect could actually be worse. It could easily shut down a number of competing units, and knowing how drum corps struggle to fund raise, and with the stigma of students and parents not liking the tarnished reputations (if made public), and I'd say this activity we all love would be in big trouble. Some of the corps could lose their non-profit license for operating.

Too bad. This is one of college football's treasured organizations (whether people agree or not, or whether they like them or not), and typically the band has had a fabulous reputation when they travel and how they act at home games.

Although TBDBITL is not "Corps Style" they are one of the most entertaining college bands in the country. Great amimations in their shows. Check out some of their performances on youtube.

Personally, I was never a "Party Person" in either HS or College (Didn't go to any Band Parties) and it's sad to see this situation go down.

Guess everyone knows that if someone in charge (from section leaders to director) is aware of any possible harassment and does nothing they are as liable as the person(s) doing the harassing. Had the experience of being on church council and had to tell an adult youth group helper not to be so "huggy" with the young ladies. Still waiting for the lawsuit for defamation of character, slander, etc, etc from him when he got told. Saying he went ballistic was an understatement....

And still on some council members #### list for saying we could be sued for ignoring what we heard.....

I don't think the marchers in that Stanford Band know how to do marching music OR sexualized culture.

There are middle school bands that would embarrass Stanford's motley crew:-)

While true, many of those middle schoolers will someday be working for those Stanford Band types, and uttering " Yes, Sir, Yes, Ma'am".

I agree that DCI is "one lawsuit away" from going under over something like this... and in fact, that might be what ends DCI much sooner than the slow demise we are currently facing due to rising costs.

While money was a big part of the creation of the official UVA marching band (with the money being provided by Hunter Smith who our band building is named after), the main reason the band was created was as a replacement to the pep band that was banned BY THE ADMINISTRATION after complaints by many people including the governor of West Virginia (if I'm remembering correctly) after a performance at a bowl game. They were literally shut down and banned from any athletic events. There was one season where we did not have a band at all.

that show where they made fun of west virginia was hilarious.

although, yes, it was not politically correct.
