DrumManTx
Three years in a row for that closer format. Not saying it's bad, but: Emotional build. Hit diamond on side two, most of the guard on flags, some on rifles. Right before the big hit there is an electronic effect/ethereal pit writing as they do some gates/unwinding of the diamond. Diamond unwinds into a spread curvlinear form across the field as the rifles head to flags which are all multi colored and happiness and yay. I guess if it ain't broke don't fix it, but when I heard their closer for the first time in 2014 I actually teared up a little bit at the show. I hated the show in 2015 until I saw it complete and Fly to Paradise made it one of my favorites. This year, just seems more of the same but not quite as special. And I'm not just talking similar as in they are using a formula, I'm talking the pacing, drill, guard equipment numbers, are all pretty much exactly the same sans a few little deviations. I went back and watched to be sure and it is pretty much the same timeline and template with different music slapped on it, but still somehow sounds very similar. Still really looking forward to it next week, but compared to most corps where my excitement builds during the season, my excitement has definitely dwindled with this show. Think there was some serious over hyping going on preseason about top 3/4 finishes and winning captions and it was going to be the most life changing closer I have ever seen. I still think I will really like it in the end, and I think they will definitely have a shot at finishing VERY well, but I can't help but say my expectations based on last year, what was said on here, and anticipating the closer did not help me out at all. It's a good closer and all, but I can't help feeling disappointed. Edited July 16, 2016 by DrumManTx
Cappybara
Not making judgements until I see this show finals night because who knows what in the world this design team has planned
DrumManTx
I'm gonna take a wild guess we will hear from the girl from 2014, some element from 2015 will appear, and it will be in a soft ending and happily ever after. We'll see. I still like it, but there has yet to be an addition that changes my opinion that has pretty much remained static since Stanford despite there being a lot more show. It's nice. If we judged closers by how predictable they are, I think most closers would be pretty boring (especially Crown's) I'm looking forward to seeing how they put everything together in the next 3 weeks or so

There is a difference between a formula and style versus a template. I knew as soon as they hit that block in the crappy low angle video from today exactly how the rest was going play out and I was spot on. I'm not saying it's wrong or bad, but for me it is not very exciting, at all. And knowing them there is obviously something planned after this, but what they have will probably not change a lot, they will just add. That will probably be really cool. But I can't say they have me very excited to see what it is. Edited July 16, 2016 by DrumManTx

DrumManTx
Fair enough. I assume you aren't excited to see the Crown set this year either? That's one set. Not the same build, drill move into and out of it, equipment set and color palette, and conclusion after it. That's a single recurring element.
