Drenched in DeKalb

Recommended Posts

Coats with some phasing issues tonight.

Yeah. Phasing visually and sound alignment. And a snare hole, contra hole etc. Not their strongest run...

Will be interesting how they line up with devils tonight.

I think we had this same thing last night elsewhere on DCP. Anyone that thinks any top corps' staff is "countering" what anyone else is doing is wrong. Taking that approach will only lead to failure. These are the best in the business, and their best is what comes from their hearts and minds, not some carrot-and-stick chasing of the competition.

I don't believe its really countering what the other is doing. It's more like when you play the best, it tends to bring the best out of you. Crown is a different kind of staff and design team than the usual rivals for BD which tends to push not just their stuff but Crown's staff to constantly try to push and push to be their best. Bluecoats are starting to make a name for themselves as well. More competition breeds more success.

Definite phasing issues tonight. Still trying to fall in love with this show. The music selection is unique and fantastic, but there's too much synth , especially the ending...wow. also, the ballad does nothing for me visually. I'm still trying to connect this to 'down side up' but I'm not yet...

I will credit Matt Harloff...he (like I do) loves loud, and he has them cranking the db's. Sweet.

what's amazing is they're loud, but also manage to be balanced and in tune no matter what dynamic level they're playing at.

it's a treat every single time.

It gets clearer and clearer each year that after switching away from G, Carolina Crown is the only corps to keep the type of sound drum corps were intended to produce--that homogenous, pipe-organ-like aura that you can practically *see*. A uniform "burn" in the upper voices blended with a bottom end like a punch in the chest. Only other corps that can come close these days is Bluecoats. Blue Devils play loud at points, but it just doesn't sound like a loud drum corps sound. It's just there.

On the pipe organ analogy: if you mean that crown sounds like a one rank pipe organ (different octaves of the same sound), I'd certainly agree. But I prefer pipe organs with a lot more color. Crown's show is designed around the hornline--that's obvious. They sound 'impressive', no doubt about it. But a few of the blue corps have wayyyy more dimensions.

I disagree. If you're just talking volume, yeah Carolina may be the loudest corps out there. Some however feel Cadets are the loudest this year, and I'm sure BD and Blooo are pretty loud too.

If your argument is type of sound, like the more bottom-up pipe organ type that you suggested, well that is a different argument. Bottom up, triangle system methods are what HS and colleges teach kids as a principle of balance and blend to get them started. But in the professional world of balance and blend it goes WAY beyond that. Concert Bands, Orchestras, Jazz Ensembles, Chamber Groups, Rock Groups, Pop Groups, and on and on all have the ability to flex and adapt to multiple styles, blends, and alterations in sound and phrase shaping. The Blue Devils achieve a unique sound in drum corps that really good jazz artists will tell you is appropriate and well done. The Cadets employ a outdoor Olympic-like fanfare sound where the trumpets and mellos are usually more dominant (although last year they had killer baritones). But the Cadets sound will fluctuate depending on who has melody. Same with Crown. They are more that bottom-up organ sound which has typically gone better with their music (same with Phantom Regiment).

For most of these corps balances are fluctuating. They explore different sounds, colors, balances, and phrase shaping that moves and has the ability to, at times, bring out multiple blends in one phrase. The last thing I want to hear is 12 corps that all have the same sound and blend, or even volume.

Contra hole is manageable, but a snare whole makes it infinitely harder for the line to lock in. You already know this, of course, but others might not.

What I found amazing was HOW loud they really are. There are some loud corps out there and at the last show we were at, it was noticeable to my friends and I that Crown was a step above everyone on volume.

Out of curiosity, how many females are in that section?

Six, including the outstanding Taylor Wyatt, soloist.
