Carolina Crown 2017

What's encouraging is that it seems to be resonating well with the judges.    I was a little surprised the gap with BAC increased in the show I was at in KY.   As much as I love Crown, BAC has taken their show to a whole new level from the early season.   Now, tonight, it's 2.6 and a very strong GE score.      The good news, we will all be able to see them on the same field beginning tomorrow and then we can toss much of the conjecture out the window!

And what's even more encouraging - their run last night in Arkansas was not that great. Phasing and timing issues, not very strong. Felt like the kids were a bit tired. Let's see if they can pick it up here tonight.

On the flip side, we have people who will defend anything their home team does, regardless of its flaw or drawbacks.

I'm as big a fan of Crown as anyone (2008, 2009, and 2013 are some of my favorite shows), but I'm also not afraid to call a spade a spade and call out problems when I see them. I'll also call out Spirit of Atlanta and the Bluecoats when they have problems, even though I performed with those groups, because that's what it means to be critical fan instead of a blind fanatic.

Here is my criteria:

Things I care about:

  • Does the theme, music and visual content connect with me?
  • Do I like the music?
  • Are there moments that make me want to stand up and scream my lungs out?
  • Do I get a lump in my throat and goosebumps?
  • Did the horn line successfully blow my face off

Things I could care less about or will turn me off in a second:

  • Art
  • Having to read a three page description of the theme of the show, then having to reflect on said theme prior to watching the show
  • More art
  • Shows with more than three scatter drills
  • Props that look like birthday cakes
  • Artsy fartsy shows

Your list is pretty solid.

I would just add one:  Are the outfits worn by the performers respectful of them as persons or more revealing that the designer has had some drug or drink induced fantasy?

Something else I hate is a show concept that is really just a bunch of musical and drill ideas put together, with a nebulous, esoteric, enigmatic show title that really almost anything could exist underneath. I feel like that "You had one job" meme. If you are a show designer and you have no show concept, why are you designing shows?

There you go pushing bands again.

My bad, should I have said "corpsing together"?
