jwillis35
Just incredible, BD!!! You blew me away once again. :) When you think about it, this show is so clever and filled with so many great moments. The off-the-line intro, those rifles, the first brass hit, flight of the bumble bee, and that's just the first part of the show. The ballad in my opinion is the ballad of the year. Yes, they park and bark, and boy is it tasty and brings back memories of old school drum corps. It's the best park and bark I've heard in a LONG time. The solos in the ballad are wonderful, and that trombone player gets my award for best trombone solo ever in a DCI show (slightly over Crown's kid from last year). The percussion feature is smokin' hot now, and then that trumpet feature -- are you kidding me! That sounded so professional and in tune. BD has the best high brass that perhaps I have ever heard in drum corps. Someone mentioned that 1980 line. That was certainly a good one with some of the best soloists we've ever heard in DCI. But this trumpet section is just relentless. Finally the return of the "Diamonds in the Sky" theme at the end is such a nice setup for the brass and percussion, and I love the drill at the end and how it all comes together and then pauses for the "The Concord Blue Devils." SCV probably has the better last 3 minutes of the show, but to me Blue Devils have the best front 2/3 of a show and their closer is pretty awesome. It will definitely be tight. SCV was smokin' tonight. I just don't see how anyone beats that BD show. They deserve to win in my book! Thank you Blue Crew (which is what many of us called them back in the day). And let's face it, BDs writers are in a realm all their own. I have all the respect in the world for BD, but come on, that's nonsense. The level of musicianship among SCV, Crown and Bluecoats is crazy high. They all have their way of performing. Crown will win brass. But I still believe SCV displays the best musicianship from top to bottom, beginning to end. It's easily the most challenging drill, and they perform it almost flawlessly.

Please understand we're NOT cutting down Carolina Crown's brass line because it's terrific but we hear some advanced and sophisticated jazz techniques in the Blue Devils' line which no one else can do. It's like listening to Big Bop Nouveau or the Basie Band. Edited August 12, 2017 by ThirdValvesAreForWimps
