I am also wondering about the tax consequences of soliciting designated donations specifically for legal expenses.

Is this group specified a non-profit? Thinking this would affect that status too. Lot easier to lose non-profit than get it.

Agreed.  I think it is safe to say that the "Foundation" is likely over (though I am all for giving kids scholarships.....but not as a front to somebody's yearly and pricey August vacation.........I would be curious to see what the IRS has to say about the tax writeoffs.......
