Santa Clara Vanguard 2023 Announcement Thread

Taken from Regiment’s end of the year campaign:

Looking toward 2023, we have made some changes to our design and instructional team to strengthen our educational offering and accelerate our competitive momentum. This considerable commitment is in line with other top-tier drum corps and allows us to facilitate the best-in-class experience our members, staff, and fans deserve. The investment comes with a more significant price tag, so in addition to your continued support, our Board of Directors is actively working to build a more comprehensive fundraising network.

Smart.

SCV: our finances are in a mess due to various reasons so we’re going to take a year off to hopefully get things straightened out.

PR: hey we just made things more expensive so get ready to dig deep(er)

🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

Point:

The BOD is diversifying. Yay. BTW all competing corps will have to dig deeper. It is what it is, unfortunately.

Counterpoint:  Diversifying fundraising to dig deeper in the name of competitive momentum further fuels the arms race that will pressure other corps to make moves that may be missteps that endanger them and put those who have diversified 'one bad financial year' from those pushed to the brink as well.

It's a vicious cycle

“In line with other top tier drum corps”. Old enough to remember the nuclear arms race with USSR. They have …. so we have to have even more …”. The US “won” because…. the USSR went broke first.

Did I say I agree with “playing the game”? Oh heLL to the no.  I’m just pointing out how the BOD is dealing with the state of the state. Is one corps gonna change that state? Not according to many posters who feel DCI is/are the corps.

And your recommendation to change this arms race? Relying on your memory of the nuclear arms race…. We’re not that different in age.

I think this is more of a chicken and an egg thing. What comes first, building a comprehensive fund raising network, or beefing up the design and instructional team? Which came first with Boston?

All I have to go on PRs intentions is what you posted.

Problem is I can’t tell if “in line with other corps” means they think they are trying to keep up with the Jones’ (other corps) or they think it’s a good phrase to get people to open their wallets. (One of my college Alma maters comes up with some “keeping up with changes” when fundraising. And in reality they are hurting financially but don’t want to say it)

If trying to keep up with other corps I’d suggest looking internally.
