DCI DAMAGE CONTROL

In light of SCV not fielding a 2023 corps:

DCI on DCI.org looks like business as usual. Other than links to corps news on DCI.org, where is DCI in this?  SCV going dark in 2023 is one of the biggest stories for DCI since its inception. This  event not only will reduce appeal to the DCI product on the field, but threatens the existence of, arguably, the greatest unit in the activity.

SCV’s woes are not the same of so many corps that went out of business before them.

DCI is on life-support and drastic measures are needed for its survival.  It’s time for DCI to break out of BAU operation and transform the activity.

No cause for panic.  This is only one corps.  Well, VMAPA runs two corps and they are both sitting out, but it is just two corps.  Well, okay, Legends makes three.  Oh, and Shadow liquidating... four.

Still, it is just one world-class corps.  And with Spirit and Cascades returning in 2023, we are still +1, right?

You’re DCI, what would you do?

As others have said DCI "is the corps" > maybe it's time for that to change in some manner. We've seen for decades now, what a powerless "DCI" gets us.

When you say "DCI", what do you mean?

DCI IS THE CORPS. they are the governing body.

The office, including Dan A., have little authority to enact sweeping structural changes to the activity. When one the so-called leaders of DCI  - one that for years bragged about having the highest staff payroll -  goes inactive, the only action it triggers is the feeding frenzy by the other corps to pick at the carcass.

Exactly part of the problem. The NFL is a similar non-profit that acts as the executive body for the 32 teams  it protects the “shield”. This is exactly what DCI should be doing to protect its member corps. DCI can, and should, do a better job of this.

Do you expect the corps directors to run each other’s groups for them?  If you’re a corps director or board member FUNDING IS YOUR JOB. Budgets are your job. Balancing said budget is your job.  Fund your corps or fund off.

They can make suggestions but you can’t do someone else’s job for them.

if DCI (meaning the world class member corps directors) really wanted to grow DCI, they’d find better ways to entice show operators, and help out open class. Seriously. OC has no safety net. Show ops have no reason to gamble money against a rain out.  Fix that. Stop crying over the big corps and help out the ones who create local connections.  The world class member corps directors should already know how to run their corps successfully. That’s why they were hired.

SCV folded because of decades of poor decision making and worse business decisions that alienated the local community and stretched their financial resources to the brink. Despite every advantage they had, their arrogance caused this, not DCI.

I know, some people will say it's just a hiatus, but I'm dubious. At the very least we can probably say the vanguard cadets (the corps that actually wins and is focused on educating local students) will never hit the field again.

All true. The problem is the dwindling numbers of corps and the business model they must have to be a top 6 corps. It’s been an ongoing arms race played by some unqualified participants that has added to the mess the activity finds itself in today.

i understand the limitations of DCI as an executive body for the member corps. Admittedly, I’m not sure what the answer is for guaranteed survival of the activity. I do get the sense that it’s possible DCI can get to the point in a downward spiral that it can’t pull itself out of.

Based on unit numbers, scale, and fair share of controversy, I think most of us would agree DCI has been is downward spiral for a while now. Hopefully that downward spiral is not past the point of no return. That’s why is time for transformation, ingenuity, and selflessness on the part of DCI and all member corps to find a way forward.
