Just an idea, SCV

Recommended Posts

Just throwing this out there....

With it becoming more and more difficult and more expensive to do business and run a non-profit in California, would the San Antonio Vanguard make sense? Professional sports teams have made a move before. Garfield is no longer the home of Cadets.

The Houston Mandarins?

The D/FW Blue Devils?

VMAPA has already established a "Vanguard Texas Affiliate" to explore this to a degree, which I've brought up elsewhere. But I don't get the sense that they want to move operations, or change the name or identity. Rather, it's to establish bingo operations in the state and take advantage of the more business friendly tax/oversight landscape in Texas. (Gross. This is one of the reasons I left Texas. Poor employee rights protections.)

I've been told that half of Vanguard in 2022 was from Texas. More than have of SCVC was not from the Bay Area directly near SCV HQ. And surely a corps based in the middle of the country would make logistics easier. So I get it. But even I don't want to see a DFW Vanguard, and thems my stomping grounds. Most of my family is still there.

I'd much rather SCV fixed their operations and revenue streams for good and stayed home in Santa Clara. Plenty of businesses and nonprofits are doing just fine in Cali.

I can't think of a single alum who would welcome such a move anyway. Not that it's up to us. Besides, I don't think Cali drum corps are ready for Texas band director egos. Many of those cats frighten the parents of their students into compliance like dictators. Have fun with that.....

where do most of the paying customers for drum corps live?   (no... not those in the stands.  Those who pay to do this.)  That's right.  Big BOA programs.  Texas, Florida, Indiana...etc.  Yes there's a few from PA, NJ, KY, CA, MN/WI, OH...   but there's a reason BAC started having florida camps in 98/99.  And Cavies in GA. and others in Texas.  Bring the business to the customer.   Most of the corps now have a Home office, but do everything else in other cities or states.

Heck, if the goal is to make $ outside of CA, SCV should go to Vegas & open a hotel / casino.   Doesn’t need to be Drum Corps theme, but maybe one nod could be restaurant called ‘Miss Amana’s’.  And they could take bets on DCI at the sports book.
