Biggest messups in DCA history?

Recommended Posts

well, that was a close 2nd :P

no...how about that tenor player (that's how long ago this was) in the Rebels...ask your Dad his name..in 76??? He was so tanked when they went on for retreat...he turned around to face the back of the field and then...lifted his drums and proceeded to take a leak right on the field !! Now that probably should be in the most ahole moment...no the biggest messups but still too funny !

It was '72 the Snapette's crowd favorite drum solo known as 'Tequila', had just ended. The corps formed a company front on the 50 yard line and began their signature full corps pinwheel. For untold reasons somebody turned the wrong way and the pinwheel grew and grew and spun faster and faster except is was going in wrong direction. When the last member, Steve Blisters, (a real dot Nazi) was the only guy going in the right direction and didn't really care that the rest of the corps was going in the wrong direction. He was gonna nail his spot. The outcome was ugly to say the least. A field judge comment on the sheets said that the guy trying to high five the pinwheel was knocked off the field. No one has see him since. Rumor has it he's a amplifier rep in the rock industry somewhere in LA.

For the Bicentennial DCA corps were supposed to bunch up in the back at the start of retreat and then all corps would march forward playing the first part of Stars and Stripes(?). At Hershey there were 7 corps and it got all balled up. However yelled the start off just did a quick yell instead of counting off. Result was some corps started playing right away, some waited a beat and one waited 4 counts. Think this got canned by DCA Champs but can't remember anymore.

Not sure if you classify this as a messup, but I remember it like it was yesterday. It was maybe 1978 in Bridgport CT, there was a 2nd DCA show at Kennedy Stadium that year, they played to the Press box side of the field, not the other side like Champions on Parade. Anyway, small DCA show, Hurcs, CABS, SKY, SUN maybe one more. SKY was awsome that night, they tore the roof down, the crowd went crazy. When scores were announced and all the corps were on the field for retreat, Sky ends up with a low score. They went nuts, they started coming forward, brass players, staff and others, MFing the judges left on the side lines, it was ugly, yet funny. Best part was a few guys started picking up orange cones off the front side line and started hurling them at the DCA Table. The crowd loved it! Ahhhhh.... the good ole days!

And that brings up a flashback from the same era. We were at either a small DCA (with the lower corps) or an RCA show in upstate PA or NY. Show was at the town ballfield and the mayor was asked to say a few words. Hizzonor was totally tanked and just kept rambling on and on and..... After a while we started taking bets if he would shut up, pass out or get the mic turned off. The guys in the back of the corps were standing on their toes to try to see where the mayor was standing. Only show I can remember yelling to the corps next to us during retreat. "Hey Erie, can you see him?" "No Westshore, might be in the pressbox, but the windows too dirty to tell"

That was 1980.... the weekend before championships.
